Actually, we are all privateers.
We operate privately owned ships and are under a "letter of Mark" from our respective factions/planet security forces to attack and plunder that entities enemies.
Even the Imperial pilots fall into this since you have to buy your own ships and you are considered "militia".
And the difference between pirate and privateer usually depends on what side of the guns you are on.

And the Skill is listed as "Freelance Pilot" so the term "Freelancer" is entirely appopriate.

Also I find the need to surrender all skills to change from one "Freelance" Group to another is rather annoying, you have to give up all your skills just to change your contract..... I really don't understand this in terms of the Imp's, Rebel' either.... Piloting skill is piloting skill, some of the Rebellions best pilots were supposedly former Imperials, and prized for the expeience they brought... I have some ideas around this you should be able to "transfer" within the faction you are in, ie. From RSF to SA or CorSec. There should be penalties for switching from one Faction to another, but total loss of skills seems (having a hard time comeing up with diplomatic terms here) foolish. An Ace pilot should be a great thing to have come over.... but as it stands it means gaining a newbie.... perhaps a quest of some sort to prove loyalty but to lose everything you know just doesn't feel right.

OK first of all, its Privateer, not Freelancer, get the names straight.

It is what it is, enjoy it, there's bigger fish to fry, adds an element to the game anyway.

I started out going up the non-RSF tree in ignorance, among my Imp guildmates, and found out I made a wrong choice, and resigned completely and started over up the RSF line. All good, enjoy it.

It's Privateer only for us BETAS!

All NooBs or non-betas have to say Freelancer.....

(Sorry I could not resist.)

But really, I think most of us BETAS say Privateer, because this was the original name the profession got and it sounds better at all - in my opinion.....

Really, no kidding? I never noticed that. Why they change the name to the name of another game? My bad. Sorry. Freelance, yuck, sounds dainty. Privateer rocked.

Thought everyone was going nuts... back to beta for me.

Fundamentally opposed to the SWG GR (Game Revamp) - Fix Classic SWG incrementally rather than embarking on balancing a New SWG from scratch - Players have suffered enuf for 2 yrs., time to build on strengths, thanks! - CLICK HERE

Privateer is the name of another game too, so it really doesn't matter. Neutral is probably the best name imo.

Just for abit historical perspective:

A"Letter of Marque and Reprisal", was a liscense granted to private citizens to fit out an armed ship to plunder an opposing nations shipping. With this written authority, a private person was given permission to seize the subjects and goods of a foreign state.

Technically, a privateer is a private ship liscensed to attack enemy shipping, or reference to someone who is a crewmember on such a vessel.

With that having been said, while all privateers are freelancers, not all freelancers need be privateers.

YMMV.

I just got the expanSion for christmas and came across this problem and that's why I'm here. I've been playing the game for almost a year now and was excited about getting JTL to add a little more. I am reb on planet but wanted to do neut in space mainly for ships. I knew I wanted to fly for jabba but whenI loaded itI didn't see anything that realy looked like it mattered soI took corsec becauseI go though coronet all the time. I just finished tier 2 today andI found out to fly for jabbaI need to be part of smuggler guild. I found outI had to drop everything I did to this point which pissed me off since it's in same faction. I can see if you want to change faction trees like on the ground but to just change the guild you want to work forI think blows. I was so pissed i had to shut the game down and decide ifI realLy wanted to do it. I know tier 2 I should be able to get back within a week if i spend some time working on it but it the fact that I hav to start back with the same weak ships thatI just got destroying a day ago to get my kimogila whickI like firepower of. Kinda debating on waiting to see if they change it butI don't wanna take a chance and not sure what benefits there is between corsec and smuggler. I JUST WANT TO CHANGE MY GUILD NOT PROFESSION.
