Snip from the article:
>>the expansion will also introduce the Jedi Starfighter II featured in the prequels
Great... just...great. All i can say is this damn ship had better not exceed ANYTHING beyond any space ship in current existance, and better have NO extra abliites AT ALL. If sony makes it so that we all have to grind j3d 3y3 to be viable in space PvP too, im sooo done with this game.

OK it looks like we will finally get space mining. Many have requested this feature and Im glad to see this kind of gameplay go into space.
Now we can discuss what kinds of mining we would like to see. Will we have the same resources that are found on the ground in space or will space be the only way to get totally new resources for new craftable objects? The latter seems more logical to me (we can mine very efficiently on the ground so why would we go in space to do it).
At last! Been waiting on this for a while....
Just to be clear, getting space mining isn't the full commercialization of space I'm hoping one day to see. I think Merchants ought to have an expanded role in space, for example. Still, asteroid mining is a necessary start, and I congratulate SWG's developers for getting us started down this road.

speaking as a shipwright, im very excited for space mining. I think that if space resources were exclusively used to craft starship products, or were simply best for crafting them, it could really revive the profession. I love the idea of a mining ship, it could have 3 stations: pilot, gunner and miner. it would be able to defend itself against low level NPCs, but would need a fighter escort to mine the better stuff

Mining in space sounds exciting... I hope we get more info soon.
Now I read the press release at LucasArts website and the part regarding mining you could interpret in a couple of ways.
For discussion here is the part I'm talking about...

Any starcraft can be modified for space mining, but dedicated miners will earn a sophisticated high-end ship, allowing them to traverse space while mining and fighting with up to 19 friends as shipmates!
Dedicated miner... Does this mean Artisan, Master perhaps?
High-End ship....Does this mean a higher Tier cert, Master Perhaps?
It's possible you may have to be an Ace pilot of any faction but also a Master Artisan on the ground too.
Everyone else most likely will be able to equip a mining component but will only be able to mine small amounts compared to the multiplayer mining ship.
Sorta like using a personal miner with out having any skills.
Also I'd like to add that I wouldn't be surprised to find that some of the components for many ofthe new weapons or armor in the CU needed to be made from resources mined out in space.

What i want to know is if there will be some cool animation like a beam coming from the actual minning equipment and pulling things from the asteroid, or if we just basicly /dock with it and sit there waiting.Yes its just eyecandy but hey, if im gunna park my butt out there at least make it entertaining.

I dont think this will be a problem. There isnt any real estate in space that you can claim to yourself unlike the ground. You can fly anywhere you want even clip other player ships. As long as the particular resources cannot be depleted by any one player or group of players it will be fair.
Good point. I suppose it depends on whether your ship physically mines as though you're using the /sample command or if you can place objects in space to mine for you like a harvester. Since space stations can be collided, I assumed space "harvesters" would too.
Sort of ironic though when you look at the big picture, it's backwards! Resources would shift around in space and be static on planets but SWG does it the other way around!

I am ALL FOR Episode III content. We've been yelling for more Star Wars in our SWG, and when the Devs give it to us, we complain. That danged silly.
I am HAPPY to have MORE SW content in SWG.

Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookies
So um.. how come IGN has all this info released to the public before SOE and LucasArts?

As they say on their website... they were given an exclusive (or they paid for one.) Better question is why isn't there at least a link to the article on the SWG homepage?

A beam? this is Classisc Trilogy man, it'll be a big drill and some sort of pipe sucking in the debris. I'd be happy with that.

I'd rather see mining stations....player owned space stations with droids that mine and deliver the resources to the station for processing. That would probably introduce the GCW to space properly...with specific stations being controlled defended etc...although it may lead to unfair owning of certain resources by factions...but then i suppose thats what its like in real life. The imperials should have star destroyer or some sort of corvette defence....the rebels would have to rely on the neutral owned stations for resources like they would have to anyway...giving smugglers something to do thats a bit more exciting. Like having smuggle resources out of a station and past a blockade without being detected...now thats star wars...
i use .... far too much....
tons of stuff for them to do, shame the idea won't happen like that. I mean they have certain numbers of player towns with ranks, why not ranked space stations for guilds...oh well....

Of course beams. that is how it is done in most mining operations in the books and WEG roleplaying books. i mining ship would come by and grab a asteroid with a tractor BEAM and pull it into a extractor to pull the minerals out of it. if they came across a asteroid to big for the extractor they used BEAM cutters to cut the rock into smaller pieces, hte reason for the cutters is that cannons would explode the rock insted of breaking it up. The only exeption to that is the mole miners that lached onto a asteroid or landed on the ground and used a plasma BEAM to drill holes and pull up resourses.
