Not true. You can be Rebel or Imperial on ground, but be Neutral in space, but you cannot (anymore) be rebel on ground and imperial in space. If you are a imperial pilot and on ground and want to swap ground faction to rebel, then you will also loose the pilot once you swap the ground faction... This does not apply to Neutral pilots though. As a neutral pilot you can swap factions inany way you see fit (Perfect for smugglers in example for rolplay... etc.)
As for the Side perks: Every pilot proffesion gets a Pilot jacket and Helmet form the faction they are. Also every pilot gets a 92.2 engine somewhere in tier4.
Neutrals also get a gun called "Borstel Disruptor" somewhere in tier4, this is a very fine piece, since it is only 39k of weight with a refire rate of 14 and an energy consumption per shot of mere 0.4 whilst doing something aroud 4k of max damage (Sunno the exact without checking ingame, wich i cant, im at work atm
)with a vs shield/armor of 0.63/0.64. I carry 2 of those in my advanced X-Wing for example..

I discovered, to my dissapointment, that it's your GROUND faction that determines what mission you get from the Kasshyk space station (Heavy X-Wing, Red Guard TIE In, or Vaksai).
I'm an imp on the ground, privateer in space, and I got the Red Guard Interceptor mission. So when I'm done it, I'll be given a ship I can't fly. To do the Vaksai mission, I'd have to drop my ground faction ![]()

So, I dropped my Freelance pilot skills but I had forgotten to strip my ships, and could not manage them afterward... no great loss, so I destroyed the frames. I still had my 50-item bandolier container!
I went and signed up with the Imperials, flew some missions, got a great TIE pilot bodysuit... then I took OFF the bandolier (was adjusting my muscle slider down with Image Design)... and then I was not able to put the bandolier BACK on.
That's right, I was mysteriously unqualified to put on a bandolier belt. Bad enough I mysteriously forget how to fly a particular ship type... bad enough I could be a master ace pilot and then not know how to use even the most basic components in a new type of ship... but I can't wear the bandolier because---- what, it is a SYMBOL of the Freelancers? I guess from a roleplaying point I could buy that... like wearing a TIE pilot uniform after you leave the Empire to become a rebel would not be permitted by your superiors, etc...
Still quite annoying to have to go back to the Spec Ops back bouncing around on my back

Nope, you can do both. Your ground faction qualifies you to finish the quest at the imp station, your pilot profession qualifies you to also finish it at Kashyyyk space station.
