Perhaps the problem is your flying, not the jump timer. Tier 5s are pushovers once you get to about Tier 3.

There is a precendent in the movies for jump timers. Han didn't go right to lightspeed after blasting his way out of Mos Eisley. They had to dodge while the computer made the calculations. It isn't just a timesink. It is part of the Star Wars universe. What you are proposing is actually less Star Wars-like than what we have. On top of that, if you need to make an emergency jump against those Tier 5s, you're actually more likely to get blown up under your proposed system. I'm still not really seeing an up-side to this change.

Go to deep space.
Keep on agroing fighters until you get about 10 of them chasing you, then engage them.
Lots of fun.

Dodging hostiles (PvE or PvP) to wait out a timer is fun but kinda easy. Doging hostiles while trying to a point in space is fun and proposes a bit more of a challange.

Why getting to a point in space to jump to lightspeed is Star Wars content. Read a few of the books and you'll see that ships can only jump to lightspeed at certain locations due to "gravametric" interference. A ship can not jump to light speed in an intredictor feild. Nor can it do so in a large gravity well. That's why the Falcon didn't go to light speed as soon at it left Mos Eisly. That and a ship going to lightspeed in an atmosphere would be catastrophic. It had to get far enough away from the planet to be able to make the jump.

The upside of this it that is allows more flexability in creating space content.
Escorting ship that are jumping out of system would actually make sense. If they were actually just making calculations. Why not just sit there and to the math instead of flying into waves of hostile fighters?
Delivery missions would have an option for "outgoing" content as well as "incoming" content.
Additional CGW content can be added. Such as if your Overt in space there is a chance you might get pulled out of hyperspace due to an intreditor field and have a bunch of vastly superiour hostiles attack you. And oh look to get out of the intedictor feild you have to fly to a certain point(instead of oh i'm being attacked, I'll just activate hyperspace and keep on dodging these guys until i jump out).

Hyperspace is a going from point A to point B thing not going from time A to time B thing. So why not make the initiation of jumping to lightspeed actually involve a traveling element instead of a time one?
