Thread: Soul of Star Wars... is it still here?
If you mean MMORPGs, you're right, all of them require some grinding.

Okey, I am not much a RPler myself, but I do not know of a single one RPG where you don't do some kind of grinding. Call it leveling or however you like, without XP you wont go up the ladder.
Someone wrote, that the game is way to big.

Well there would be grinding involved. Rather than have a "Force village" that feels more like a jedi daycare then anything realy star warsish. SOE is so busy making up new material like the force village that they don't even notice that they bought a license with so much story and content to use. Instead they make up a "Force village" that feels lacking and un-star wars. Why did'nt Luke ever go to the Force Village? I know it would be even stupider if we all went to Yoda lol, but my idea is to take the current Jedi players that we have (which are quite a few now) and turn them into the masters. They have a quest menu... they can give there tranies a quest or two ever week and they are the only people who can train them in skill boxes. Thus they get Jedi AP wich leads to Jedi Master or Sith Lord. So training others, making friends, and building comunity will be aided... most people leave this game because there 'isnt enought RP, or because they feel lonely... this in my mind makes it so that you have a solution for both problems. Also, you will still have to grind a bit... one must have experiance to gain a skill box... and a teacher to gain it. Also a teacher could go on missions with there learner, or aid them in getting exp, mabey even have missions that are only for master and learner. This way you still have grinding, but your making a good friend in the porsess. Honestly I'm not the only person that gets a numb brain while I'm out there grinding out 10,000,000,000 exp to transfer it into 10,000 exp for my FS skills lol. If you had a "master" or a "guide" it would aid in having a better experiance, remember its the players that build the game not the grinding lol. So in short I'm not saying lets get rid of grinding, I'm saying lets use grinding to build comunity and story.
What do you guys think?
Well honestly, the point is the Soul of Star Wars!
I understand that the Developers have made continuity errors with putting this rediculous village but you can only make the best of it. Again I agree that it is mind knumbing to grind 10,000,000,000 xps but see you choose to go that path. You choose to look at it from that perspective because all you have done is grind and kill and grind and kill then go trade your xp for FSP. That is your mentality of the game and that is what is wrong!
I agree with some of the statements above... Most of the people in this game have this same mentality. You know what, do what a jedi is supposed to do and go help people in their quests. Try to make spread peace, also survive in the wild because your the hunted. You wont be hunted so much if you use your skills like your supposed to do.
Instead you have Jedi running around PVPing and wondering why they get targeted on the bounty hunter terms. Your supposed to live a secretive life, one of solitude. One of peace. Your also supposed to stop the Sith, I know and vice versa so I cannot blame you guys for showing up at a big battle. But if you can roleplay your characters and stop with this .... I need 1000000000000 xps to get to my next level crap so im going to grind and grind and grind mentality then you will probably enjoy the game a little more.
Yeah you have to get to the next level but what about, "lets take out them turrets, the imperials are going to far by placing an imperial base in an area that was once free" or the Sith versioin "Ha, let us cause pain to those who have wronged us in the past. Life but a petty oject to be taken from the hands of the weak! Give me strength for I shall Avenge all who have crossed the Sith!"
Do it this way and your in game and pretty much roleplaying.
Grinder 1 Now here are the grinders version "You going to go PVP today?"
Grinder 2 Response "Yeah I think im gonna hit that base in Talus"
Grinder 1 "ok let me know cause I wanna kick their arsses, For now im going to just grind out quankers for my next level"
Grinder 2 " how much do you have to go?"
Grinder 1 "Uh.. i got like 67009876 to go then im hitting the village."
Grinder 2 "yeah im like only like 60K from my next level"
Grinder 1 "yo meet you back at the city!"
Grinder 2 "alright due, is that dancer there... cause i need a mind buff."
Get the picture this is freaking boaring boaring boaring boaring and it is annoying to see people talking like this! This is starwars man get with the program and act out your characters! There should be a set RULE, somewhere in the SOE EULA stating that people caught not roleplaying will inquire an XP penalty or something to get the fire under people to actually immerse themselves.
Another point to make, is when you accpet missions from the mission terminal there is writing there. Your actually accepting missions to help farmers and such clear animals from areas that are hurting them in some way, or your helping kill these animals that pose a threat to the community some how. If your read the description you will understand why your doing what your doing instead of just clicking accept accept then running to do the missions.
The roleplaying tools are all there. Just nobody knows how to use them.
One thing I do have a gripe with is that PVP needs tweaking, other then that this game has to be one of the best games in the market for roleplaying. Its a shame that nobody really knows how to use it.
Its like they are expecting a end movie to scroll up so they can jump to the next game and if they dont get it they trash the game for being boring. Trust me... if its boring its because your not involved with anything that is going on in the server and you pretty much made it that way for your self! Just remember to trash how bad a roleplayer you are when you leave this game behind and go on to the next to find the same problems again and agian.

Problem I have with this, is that the players are not the ones who make the requirements for becoming the professions they choose or wish to be....if the devs changed the xp requirement for swordsman or armorsmith to 10 million xp, players menatlity would be no different then it is wanting to become a jedi. It's not the player that is wrong for taking a profession they set their sites on before they even knew what the requirements would be (which keep changing)...it's the devs trying to create a loooooonnnnggg time sink to keep people playing and was an attempt to discourage the impatient people and try tokeep the jedi population down...unfortunately they failed....the most worshiped profession in star wars is jedi and there's many more people who want it so bad that they will put up with whatever the requirements are...even if they don't like it.

I totally agree, but the devs don't give us this kind of control with the requirements needed to be a jedi, there's consequences for helping people (visibility)....avoiding visibility is something "NO JEDI" can avoid....even if you stay to yourself a shuttle will drop on your head giving you visibility...at some point and time you will be hunted
Instead you have Jedi running around PVPing and wondering why they get targeted on the bounty hunter terms. Your supposed to live a secretive life, one of solitude. One of peace. Again, this is something the devs forced on jedi....you have to pvp in order to advance in the FRS....if you don't pvp, you won't be able to become a complete jedi.....from a roleplayers point of view, the FRS is part of being a jedi for those that want the status of climbing that ladder...in star wars, many many jedi want to be on the jedi council and many didn't.....SWG's version of the council requires lots and lots of pvp and if you want the bonuses that other jedi you will sooner or later face have, you have to climb the FRS ladder....so again, another part of the game the players don't have a say if you want to be a jedi.

Man! I would love to be able to include some roleplaying like this......but for a jedi, when the penalty is so severe, roleplaying at various levels becomes more of a pain in the butt than grinding is....matter of fact it makes that grind 10 times longer and 10 times more boring.....to risk being instantly DB'd by a turret for a low level jedi and potentailly end up with a negative 10 million xp or gain visibility and get ganked by a BH and his group of thugs looking for their daily jedi fix....they get paid if they win and you get put behind the 8-ball.....well heck, who wants that....so again, it's the system the devs put into play....it doesn't fit with the GCW.
For normal fs grinding and roleplaying, I agree that many people could roleplay more instead of grinding....however, roleplaying requires many more people to actually be worth doing, otherwise you get the feeling like being the only one at a costume party in costume....

I'm with you all the way as far as the tools being there and not being used.....the reason for this is because the people that are playing the game are not roleplayers first of all....Second, the roleplaying communtity is the minority when it comes to video games or MMORPG's.....the true roleplayers are still playing pen and paper games with the occasional trips to the computer for RPG's based on D&D rule sets.....the vast majority of players that make up videogaming are those with the mindset thatit's just a game and there is an end result to it all and you should be all powerful once you get there (or in on your way to that point).....it's thetype ofplayers that don't want to use their own imagination, they much rather another person or group make the fantasy for them....i.e. they want SOE to make all the content and roleplayingfor them so all they have to do is turn on the game and play.
Probably the biggest problem I think in SWG is thatit's probably closer to real life than other MMORPG's or fantasy games......90% of SWG is based on real life issues, real life principles and is basically built and run like real life. The only fantasy in SWG isjedi, space, certaintechnilogical advances andwierd aliens......the core ofSWG though is real life issues that flow deep deep into politics with fighting and combat being expressed as the best way to solve conflicts....kind of boring when you think about it...so we gravitate more to thecombat side of things because that's more exciting than siting in a room negoatiating. since combat does not need roleplay or any reason whatsoever for roleplayto exist in it....it's easy to throw roleplay out the window.....thus we miss out on one of the most important factors of a MMORPG or any rpg for that matter.....bottom line is people are just lazy and the effort it takes to roleplay sometimes is far more work than just pressing a button to do a special move (that doesn't require a lot of thinking or imagination...roleplay does)

Is there a game out there where you can play at the time period of the first movies?
I just got done watching the DvD's myself. A friend was like 'after watching those movies you are gonna jump headlong back into SWG'.. I think the movies had the opposite effect.
I want to play in THAT universe. I would be willing to play a 1 person RPG if they have it. Not that I am quitting this game.. but I wanna have a little escapism untill they fix this one.. and I would like to play in the Star Wars Universe around the time of New Hope.
Is there such a thing that exists or am I just wasting my time?
Well.. I have an answer for you... but youre not going to like it lol....
Youre in luck, there is such a game. Its called 'Super Star Wars' for you Super Nintendo Entertainment System (there is a full series.... Super Empire Strikes Back and Super Return of the Jedi). There is also Shadows of the Empire for the Nintendo 64 and also PC if you can find either one. other than that, thats about it. The closest thing youll find on the PC are the Dark Forces series and the Jedi Knight series which actually take place during the Expanded Universe Era (right after Return of the Jedi). You could also check out Bounty Hunter on the PS2 and I think its on Gamecube as well, but that is Clone Wars time and you play as Jango Fett... suppose to be good though.
Then of course there is always KOTOR and KOTOR II on Xbox (PC Release in February 05) But those take place 4000 years before the events of Episode 1.Lucasarts for some reason seems to avoid the origional era like a plague.I hate it too because its my favorite era.
A couple rail shooters like Rebel Assault (Barf now, please).

Now I got the Star Wars Trilogy DVDs, there great and I even watched the whole disk with all the extra stuff and it was great also, but I could'nt help ask this question.
Star Wars is about adventure, exploration and well war. I have to admit that I playing as a rebel, don't feel very scared of the Empire... and with all the houses on Tatooine, it feels more like Las Vegas then tatooine. The world at times feels kinda cut and paste, look I'm sure that every cantina in the galaxie dosnt look like the one in Mos Eisly. Also since when did a jedi gain his/her abilities through killing millions of creatures for exp lol!!!!???
Now I know that SOE needed to create a game, but I can't help feel that the game has strayed away from what Star Wars is realy about... adventure and fun! So far they are doing an ok job, I'll give them that, but when I got the game and it said on the box: Experience the greatest Star Wars Saga ever told - yours.... I felt like I would be experiancing things like in the movie. Running from the Empire, training under a master to become a jedi (not killing a billion things to become a jedi... see training takes just as long, but you learn about the force... you don't kill for the force). Alot of the music thats in the movies wasn't even used in the game... when its said that music makes half the Star Wars experiance.
I think when SOE got the idea to try a Star Wars MMO, they should have come from the idea that they would build a world, not a game. They have done an ok job... but the game falls short when it comes to giving you the full Star Wars feel. I think some times mabey they should have used "Zones" so that the areas could be filled with more detal and such without causing lag. Playing as a rebel should be tough, because the Empire is always hunting you... and the more you do for the Alliance the more wanted you should become. The more stuff you do for the Empire, the more well known or feared by the normal people you become... that kinda stuff.
I know they can't change the game to be zone based or anything... but to improve the Empire vs Rebel conflict would'nt take much... just a few things like make the crackdown a crackdown... not just a few more stormies in mos espa.
The only other thing that realy gets me is the way they have aproched Jedi. Jedi are not some all powerful beings that can do anything they wan't and take forever to become, and there defently not some level 60 type of player that should be "rewarded" for hard work. Jedi Initiates and Padawans are very much killable if you will. A Jedi Initiate... if there not a child, is almost defenceless for the only thing that real makes a Jedi powerful is the force, and they haven't even mastered it enough to be a threat to anything more than a fly or a cat! I belive that Jedi should'nt be a class that you start with... I like how you "find" it in this game, but I find killing bajillions of critters for exp converstion to be a bit anti-jedi when it comes to the feel. Rather I think that a player should gain jedi through a very well thought out storyline, quests, and such. Now I know some of you are going to say well there are quests. But all the quests do are lead to grinding, and jedi arnt about grinding (they should have to do that once they become the jedi). I think that every person should get a "master" sorta, a npc that teaches them the ways of the force (once there are enough player jedi then it changes). When enough players become jedi (kinda like now) they take on a lerner of there own... they get mabey a menu of quests that they can send there intiate on thus the players are tought to become jedi, not grind to become jedi. This would also help with comunity growth for new and unexperianced players. Now I know some of you reading this are jedi, and you don't want it to change because you feel you worked hard.. and you have I respect that, the reward for you is a special bage placed on your char... and you get to be the first masters!!! Thats an hounor in my mind. Also a few requirements to become an intiate I would say (so a person just logging one can't bam become one lol) would be to gain location badges, master 2 elite classes, gain 3 content badges... then the hard part... finding a master.
Well I'm sure that it takes more than a post to get them to change the game a bit, so if you like the proposed ideas then please post, make a big noise sorta say, WE WANT STAR WARS... not UO/EQ with a star wars front, Star Wars is about adventure not mindless hunting, its about the great story, evil vs good, dark vs light, Empire vs Rebel. This game is great, it just need a boster shot and I hope with all your help mabey we can get them to pump some pure force into this game, and hay with a big change in the game we could get more players to join us... thus more expantions would be made and even more money placed into this game!
So lets see if we can get SOE to look at us, and listen to us and try and bring the Soul of Star Wars to Star Wars Galaxies!
i got goose-bumps when i saw those words, "Expierience the greatest Starwars Saga ever told..... Yours...."
i still get goose-bumps
but back to subject, i agree that SWG is one of the least un-starwars-y feeling sw games i've played
i still play it but, a ton of work needs to be done to make it feel starwars-y (expecialy the MUSIC) we need the entire sw soundtrack, including dual of the fates *Drool*
