If i remember right the reason behind this was that i you did not hit the ship right your lasers would be absorbed into the shield therefore causing no damage.

We may want to consider that the "graphic" part of the game doesn't always correspond with the "role playing" part of the game. What you see isn't ALWAYS what you get. I've notice the same with disabled ships. I'll shoot them, and it appears that 2 of my 3 shots go through. But I will notice the ship does take damage.
That's a nice thing anyway. If a ship is disabled, fire only 1 weapon. It allows your capacitor to recharge for the next wave, and your target isn't going anywhere anyway.
I've also noticed the thing of hitting them too close doesn't damage them. Maybe it's minimum range of your weapons? (JUST A THEORY). I know alot of modern day heavy weapons (tank cannons, grenade launchers) have a minimum range until the round arms. Most RPG's I've played (before computers), energy weapons have a minimum range.
Now I'm not defending this issue, I'm just pointing out what I've seen and a theory. I've noticed it too, but all it's done is give my target a little more time of stress before I wax him
