As I've seen it in most Star Wars guidebooks, some books and comics, and in the X-Wing series of games, I belive the ships were designated like:

T.I.E Fighter - Original TIE built by Republic Sienar Systems

TIE Fighter - Replaced the T.I.E, and built by Sienar Fleet Systems(Notice the change of names, T.I.E was built before the Empire was formed, as Sienar changed name after the Empire came to be)

TIE/ln - Thats LN, Line fighter, the replacer of the TIE Fighter.

TIE/in - Interceptor

TIE/x1 - What we have as the TIE Advanced ingame

TIE/ad - TIE Advanced, wich is the real advanced.

TIE/df - TIE Defender

TIE/bm - TIE Bomber

Thats just some. So by looking at that, what we have in the game would be, from that list, translated into actual ships ingame:

T.I.E Fighter - Starter ship.

TIE Fighter - Tier 1

TIE/ln - Tier 2

TIE/in + TIE/bm - Tier 3

TIE/x1 + TIE/agg- Tier 4

TIE/Opp - Ace
