Also as a side note, a game is more then directx calls. Unless you get a port of the latest code (when an update occurs) you need to emulate the windows OS in order for the app to run properly.

Please will everyone look up what emulation actually means. Wine does not do any emulation (on x86) at all. It simply provides an alternative implementation of directX, in the same way that directX from microsoft is one implementation, wineX has another one. Both translate high level graphics instructions into low level instructions the card itself performs. It also provides alternative implementations of other windows api calls, in order for the non directx stuff to work. For anyone who is actually a programmer, rather than just someone who thinks they know what they are talking about, directX/wineX is analogous to interfaces in java, you provide a list of what calls are available, but you dont know which actual implementation will be used to implement those calls. In this analogy directX and wineX would be two different concrete implementations of the same interface.

I hate to have to use dictionary definitions, but some people need a bit of help with the English language.

em·u·la·tion (> P ) Pronunciation Key (my-lshn) n.
Effort or ambition to equal or surpass another.
Imitation of another.
Computer Science. The process or technique of emulating.
Obsolete. Jealous rivalry.

em·u·late ( P ) Pronunciation Key (my-lt) tr.v. em·u·lat·ed, em·u·lat·ing, em·u·lates
To strive to equal or excel, especially through imitation: an older pupil whose accomplishments and style I emulated.
To compete with successfully; approach or attain equality with.
Computer Science. To imitate the function of (another system), as by modifications to hardware or software that allow the imitating system to accept the same data, execute the same programs, and achieve the same results as the imitated system.

To say that wineX is an emulator is not a false statement. It is attempting to emulate the directX API. On computers, it is a misconception that emulators are slower then the original implementation, but this is not always true. What is true is that wineX may be worse or better at processing, have less or more bugs, etc.. which is why SOE and most other gaming companies will not support it (that is not saying they won't work, as they might).

hmmm maybe I should try running linux with swg... I really want to run Linux but the times I have tried it out everything has been a real mess, I can't figure out how the filesystem works, and the fact that it isn't properly supported by the game makers is what stops me from using it.

I just want to say for the people playing on Linux , rock on , that is awesome I'm a huge Linux user. Someone earlier mentioned that SOE wouldn't give support on a Linux box im sure this is true, but SOE won't even support a Windows OS on a LAPTOP! I bought a Area 51 laptop (I hated it) and SOE wouldn't even talk to me b/c it wasn't a desktop.

I'll also be willing to bet anyone computer saavy enough to run SWG on Linux probably doesn't need SOE's tech support help!
