I think you are on to something here. But open it up to all ships. Remember if you take out the guns, armor, and shields you now have room for bigger engines and boosters. You can make your own track by flying around and setting wp. Rename them check 1, check2, etc... Also doing this in kessel is a great idea or even DS just to keep the thrill up.

I'm working on setting up the "Galactic Grand Prix" on Chilastra, with multiple classes (instead of C, B, A, S, we have starter, tier 1, tier 2, tier 3, etc.), prize pools, and so forth. I also intend on producing ship components specifically designed for racing under the N'Speed label, a division of the NATEC corporation of which I am a part.

Given my heavy interest in racing in the real world, I figured I might as well bring it to SWG, heh. JtL finally gave me an outlet for it.

1) Make it class based. Limiting it to just Tier 1 ships isn't fair. Some ppl ight get a kick outta racing TIE Bombers and Y-wings lol.

2) Yes badges.

3) Yes make custom race parts available. Their faster than their ombat counterparts but have no armor and very low hit points but are faster with better stats. Since their just for racing they don't need armor or weapons really, maybe a shield gen just in case you get agro'd while racing.

4) prizes, either creds or special parts.

Like I said above. Class D = starter ships, Class C = tier 1, Class B = tier 2, Class A = tier 3, Class S = tier 4.

2) Yes badges.

Heh, can't do anything about that one, sorry.

These can be REed or produced by a shipwright. And whether you choose to increase your mass (and defense)by equipping a shield is up to you, but remember that it will decrease your acceleration.

4) prizes, either creds or special parts.

Nemoidian bird cages make good trophies, especially when they're engraved with the name of the winner. And in this age of millionaires, high cash prizes are certainly viable.

Space racing is the sort of thing I loved in other multiplayer Space games...Freelancer, EnB...Um...I think that's it, but it was still pretty fun in both. It'll be even better in JtL, because of the wide variety of customizable parts and ships available.

ABout the having parts RE'd. No that can take to long. People who just start the game or who have just started on the server wouldn't be able to race at all.

'I'm working on setting up the "Galactic Grand Prix" on Chilastra'

That's really cool, I'll have to set up a character and join you.

WP's and home grown solutions are great, but can you imagine how good the 'officialversion' could be.

I remember flying through hoops as a training exercise in another space combat game, - it was boring - but wipeout on playstation is manic because you have to follow a track and the impression of speed is much greater. Hopefully we could have tracks on the surface of huge asteroids or something similar which gives us ground to avoid and the possibility of tunnels, canyons etc.
