Alright, thanks everybody I think I have enough information and will power to go back into space and give my duty missions another go!

How do you specify targets on a ship... also how do you target a ship that is in front of you... I am tired of hitting the T key for 1 minute trying to target the thing I am attacking.

To specify the sub-components of a ship you use thetwo bracket keys: [ ]

I've got the "target in front of you" command keymapped toone of my joystick buttons. The way it was in the earlier Star Wars flight games. Youmight need to go into your in-game options panel and change the keymapping. Because I don't remember if the command is mapped to any keys by default.

The x key targets what's in your sights as a default.

Ok I'll make this short and sweet....

First understand this paradigm:
Understand the science of art
Understand the art of science

The Science of Art
Calculation time in a X-wing you get forgiveness because the weapons are very far away from eachother( you have a broadsword). Even if you're not perfectly aiming at him. You can send him to see dante. In a A-wing you get a very small margin of error. You either hit or you don't. In the bigger ships well those are frigates I don't even class a nova/yt-1300 as fighters as they are slow and easily crushed. I don't care how good you think you are in one of those turrets. I can fly behind you paint a target on your hull, get it graded by an einstein after bringing him back from the dead in the time it takes for you to tell your pilot to turn up so you can get me in your sights(slight exageration). Now for the aiming. It is relative. It is not perfect. I basically understand that at around 100m-500m distance it is loosely accurate. but closer and it is useless. unless you're on his 6 in which case the reason why you aren't hitting him is because you don't have any guns or you are not firing them.

The Art of Science
use the force you know. I don't miss I don't miss cause I feel it. you know when to shoot your brain tells you when. ignore the cross hair it's a babies tool and it's inaccurate anwyay.
The human brain does a billion calculations a secound and is the best maths machine on the planet. use your head. use your experience. For instance I noticed that the cross hair is basically the top part of the profile of the ship. you know what I mean no...ok then:

This is a ship:

^^^^^^^

this is where the cross hair aims for on the ship:

>^^^^^^^

It aims slightly infront of the profile so never aim infront of the cross hair. Never lead it. If you lead it you will not hit them.

Lets take this idea further the standard neutral ship has a very thing edge at the top. So you're not likely to hit it. So aim for it's thickest point

I know that's hard to do. try this it works I never miss. Aim as though the leading edge of the profile is just behind the cross hairs so think of where the best place to hit is. It's THICKEST point is it's best place well unless it's a corvette. Imagine the profile of the ship just behind the dot of the cross hair and aim where you think the thickest point is at that point. Drag it don't lead it. Ofcourse this depends on your system my recomendation is fight tier 1's for ages until you find just exactly where the profile of the ship lays upon your cross hairs based upon your comp/lag.

well it started kinda short

and finished differently...

The indicator is only a helper, not a guaranteed hit.

The indicator shows where to shoot to hit the ship at that exact moment. You need to remember that the ship is moving, changing XYZ coordinates, changing speed, and/or turning at any given moment.

The retical is just a HINT.

Sometimes you have to lead the retical. Sometimes you have to trial it. Sometimes you shoot up and to the right, and others down and to the left.

The retical is just a hint. Practice makes perfect and flight sims take time to get used to.

As for the net connection, burst connections sound like they can be a problem because it's imperative that your game information be up to date in twitch games. All it takes is to be off a little bit and you'll most likely miss your target. I've noticed that there seems to be a little breathing room around the hit zones, though.

OK, so... is it normal to hit them multiple times (tier 1 fighting a tier 1) and still not do any damage? Some one bought me a ship, and all the parts to make it work (guildmate...... they've been trying to get me to JTL since it came out...I've been trying not to).

At any rate, I can not tell if it is because I am just stupid and can not shoot a gun (tried for almost an hour on ONE ship.... could never get a hit in on it). ven chasing right behind them (classic 6 o'clock) nothing. The shields and every thing else is right at 100%.

Only time I was able to destroy something was when this guy in a tie fighter came zipping past, and shot it. And those 200 points are the only xp I got in 3 hours last night.

I tried in ront of the crosshairs, behind them, on the ship, baside the ship.... hell I even tried random space (yep, I was a little frustrated). I can see the little blue glow around the ship, like i'm hitting it's shields.... but nothing... no damage.

After going on about this for a while, the thought came up that maybe it's my connection (satelite)?

1) If you see the shield effect and no damage is taken, not even 1%, then it is lag related (edit)*. This is usually temporary and caused when dispite seeing hits on your side, the server sees your enemy ship as somewhere else due to lag, and when it tries to run the hit check for your shot it sees it as not a true hit.

2) I have heard rumors but they are not confirmed that satilites have really horrid latency, by which I don't mean a sum total of lag from various reasons but transit time to get data from your computer to the server you are trying to reach and back. Bandwidth is capacity, not speed, and some 'high speed' connections are like sending a slow supertanker with lots of capacity from new york to boston, because its 'faster' to move that amount of capacity that way than using tons of trips in a boeing 747.. The prob is, when you just want to send a small package, the transit time is still limited to 'sleep' and 'capacity' is not relevant.

Open a console screen (programs -> accessories - > command prompt) and type ping station.sony.com and see what the milliseconds are for each response. I get about 58ms from that. In the game when I play, I use the ms indicator in the GUI optionsand it shows around 100ms most of the time. The real servers may not actually be anywhere near (network wise) the station web address, but it should give you an idea if network latency is an issue here. If it is, I am not sure what kind of solution is possible, since latency (packet transit time) is really hard to improve without changing services.

*edit: If you are shooting at a ship much higher teir than you, you may see no damage dispite the effect but would likely die fast yourself. If you are shooting at a teir 1 or 2 target, and are not hearing a high pitched beep (the high pitched beep means you are shooting something you aren't allowed to damage) then its the lag.

Just so you know, i got conformation on this today. Sat, and other Burst type ISPs (yep i'm not a geek so I don't know others) will always be a problem in space. Space is a twitch game, and SOE informed me that because of this, and the nature of sat, they do not support sat connections. (i.e. "sucks to be you") The CSR was very kind, and tried to offer a few things that might make it playable.

My problem is in hitting a tier 1, so it isn't an "it's tougher then me" thing. The guild mates actually have made sure I had a pretty good ship (yep I don't get that ship stuff yet) to take that out of the possible "issues".

Now I'm just hoping that if I am a master pilot, I can get some kind of ship that can hold some auto tracking missles, and enough of them for me to get through Kashyyyk. If not.... I just bought an expansion I can't really use. =( Oh well..... just means more armour..... =)
