Thread: SKILL POINTS

Well it is my opinion that there should be a way to unlock another character slot other than the Jedi path. I know that I would like to try another profession, however, I don't want to untrain everything and regrind up another profession only to find out I don't care for it. Then I would have to regrind my current profession. I believe that is why many people go down the Jedi path, simply for the extra slot. SOE should have an alternate way to get another character. I'd personally like to try a crafting profession, but am not willing to give up everything I've worked for so far to do it. Now I have to wait (only completed Phase 2) 15 weeks or whatever it is to get that slot.

"There are a lot of different levels within that [profession], so the people who've been [working down the Jedi path] for a long time will be much more powerful than the people just coming up. We're still rewarding people for their loyalty over the years." - John Smedley

I've got an idea- what if they changed the skill points around like this- Instead of 250 base skill points, have different skill points for different professions. For example, you start out with 250 combat skill points, 250 non-combat skill points. Just a thought.

why don't we discuss something along these lines.

archtypes.

artisans would pay a much reduced skill cost for artisan skills, and pay a midway amount of exp per medic or entertainer skills, and pay a higher rate on the combat professions, only allowing say enough points to master an elite and most of say bounty hunter.

combat types would pay low costs for combat skills (we could break these down into melee and ranged quite easily, notice that artisans would be able to aquire ranged skills easier than melee) midway for medic, entertainer, and scout skills, and the same higher rate for artisan skills as the artisans pay for combat skills

entertainers could have a few extra trees added for them, and have the same setup as the two other noted professions.

scouting individuals could be the same, add a profession called the miner, and move BH into this category (bounty hunters and rangers can basically do the same thing, just the bounty hunters are much higher tech.) the miner profession would be the extension of surveying. this would mean that scouting would be somewhat laced with artisan, but this could easily be worked out.

when i joined the game, i was asked what i wanted to be. i chose artisan.

now, my reasons for saying make the skill costs for related professions is easy. anyone who is a master mechanic in real life can with very little effort work on a small engine, like a lawnmower. anyone who can fire a pistol, is more likely to learn to fire a rifle with less effort. these skills are based off of a common tree, namely artisan, entertainer, scout, medic, marksman and brawler. someone who is a master swordsman can adapt to the use of a polearm (staff or spear) with very little form change. it takes but five minutes of holding the weapon and shifting it within your hands to find each center of balance, and get used to utilizing the cutting edge, or keeping the weapon from binding itself up on your body.

i'm not unhappy with the game. i love the game. however i do feel i should be able to master DE, ARCH, ShipWright and rifleman, then throw in a smattering of other skills like some BH skills. i don't want to MASTER bounty hunter, i simply wish to take the four investigative trees. i don't want an uber character. i want my character to be able to use his rifleman skills to bounty hunt, and what bounty hunting skills i've decided i want so i CAN bounty hunt.

I am one of the people who has been playing this game since the beginning and this argument is as old as the game. Its amazing how many people cling to the really stupid idea that they should be allowed to master everything. Most of the time its the greedy crafters who want to be able to uber crafters and still be able to fight as well as the person who puts all of his skill points into fighting. Thesesilly ideas are never going to go away
but at least the devs don't have to listen to them.

it's great to know you've been playing the game since the beginning, and that you've been paying attention to all the raging debates about uberized characters. however, i did NOT suggest the ability to master all professions.

AT NO TIME DID I SAY I NEEDED TO BE A MASTER DOCTOR, NOR DID I EVEN SUGGEST THE ABILITY TO MASTER ALL THE CRAFTING PROFESSIONS, IN ADDITION TO ALL THE COMBAT SKILLS.

there is no need whatsoever for anyone to begin flaming others, as i quite rationally explained the thought i had. had you been polite and debated the explanation like a reasonable human being, i'd have elaborated during this post, rather than having to waste my valuable time on responding to the drivel you posted.

Most of the time its the greedy crafters who want to be able to uber crafters and still be able to fight as well as the person who puts all of his skill points into fighting.

If you sir are implying that i am a greedy crafter, then you are simply another moronic idiot set against change.

toanyone who may have wanted a little elaboration, i'm not thinking we need to be able to have characters running around who can do every manner of thing. or even crafters that can beat full combat types. i'm simply suggesting that we move the skill system around a bit so that crafters can master more crafter professions (not every single one) and still have enough combat skill points remaining to invest in enough combat skills to allow themto hang around with their combat counterparts (hunting is a way for people to be together and be sociable)

however, i DO feel that a full combat type character ( under this system a character specializing in combat would be able to master somewhere around 6 elite combat professions. crafters would be able to master six elite CRAFTER professions, unless they wanted to put in a little bit of combat skills. in which case possibly as many as four crafting professions and2 full combat professions. that would be if the person did not want anything but combat and crafting professions.)

if someone wanted other things as well, depending on the modifiers to point cost applied, the character could end up with as few as two elite professions mastered, but a well rounded enough character that the character can play a musical instrument and dance a tiny bit (we're not talking about star quality here, but how many of us watched american idol? those people had the start music and start dancing options (though we'd all have preferred some didn't) and were still carrying on a profession.)

there are a LOT of ways we could make this happen, and they're all very reasonable, would allow the game to expand further, and hopefully bring in even more players. (there are a lot of people leaving the game, for what reason i do not know, however there are those who are leaving)

please everyone, post your thoughts, perhaps we can make something everyone would be happy with, and then present it to the developers.

Hmm... considering everyone can make 8 characters per account, that's 2000 skillpoints you can have fun with, and maybe more if you have a Jedi. My solution: If you want to do something different that your skill points don't allow, make a new character, and you don't even have to drop what you have.

I'm enjoying the game as a Master Tk / Master CM / Master Pistol / Master CH with my2 characters.

that would be perfect. IF the developers would allow all 8 characters on the same server. afterall, different servers mean different people. i like the people i hang with now, that's why i spend as much time as i do online.

Yes. You have the same skill points available as any toon (250). 24 of those are tied up in FS skills all the time, leaving you with 226 points to work with.
5 Jedi professions (Force Healing, Force Enhancement, Force Defense, Force Wielder, Lightsabers), skill point cost as follows:
Novice: 8
1st tier: 8
2nd tier: 6
3rd tier: 4
4th tier: 2
Master: 1

Full Mastery: 89 SP
One branch: 20 SP (+8 for Novice if you dont have it yet)

Popular template choices:
Master / Master / 2 branches in 3 professions (226 SP)
Master / Master / 3rd tier / 2nd tier in 4 professions (226 SP)
Master / 4x 4th tier / 3rd tier / 2nd tier in 4 professions (225 SP)
Master / 5x 4th tier in 5 professions (221 SP)
