So what happens if I take my overt rebel colonel up in a neutral ship? can I attack the opposite faction?
Do you need to be BOTH rebel overt AND rebel pilot?
what happens if my pilot is OVERT REBEL, but i am in a neutral ship?

Yes you can be a rebel in a neutral ship and attack the other faction. Also you can go Overt in space by /comm a Rebel Space Station.
Also the other way around. You can be nuetral on the ground but a Rebel Pilot in the air.
I know I took Neutral Pilots up in my Y-Wing. They were my gunner and were hammering Tie Figthers.
And as a rebel I went up in a Y-1300 piloted by a nuetral and had no trouble attaching Imperial Targets.

You can be a master neutral pilot, with the yt-1300, then go to a rebel space station, declare, fight imps in your yt-1300.

If your neutral you wont be able to take imp/rebel space missions so there would be no point in going into space in the first place....
Also you will have combat skills that will only effects NPCs...

Your ground alignment has little to do with your space alignment. The only effect it has is you can't have negative rebel faction on the ground and become a Rebel pilot or negative Imperial faction and become an Imperial pilot.
Your overt/covert status in space is controled by factional space stations. Your ground overt/covert status is irrelevant in space.
If you want to be a neutral pilot and kill Imperials, then you declare at a Rebel space station. If your former "friends" piss you off, then you can fly your neutral ship to an Imperial station and declare there.
Only difference really in what you'll be killing is during your missions. However, what you are killing is defined much more by your squadron than your faction. I played beta as an Imperial out of Naboo. In all but a few missions, I was killing neutral ships.

Your original question implies that you need to be overt on the ground. This is not the case my friend. Your enemy status on the ground has no bearing on the space game, other thanRebels on the groundcannot declare as Imperial Overts in space and covert Imperials on the groundcannot declare as Overt Rebels.
As a Neutral Pilot (or Freelance Pilot as they have changed the name)you can PVP freely. The only thing that is required to PVP in space is to go to a Faction Space station that you want to fight for and declare overt there. You will then be Overt until the next time you land, hyperspacing to a new sector still leaves you overt.
Example for clarification:
Covert Rebel Bob is a Neutral pilot and wants to go Imperial hunting. He simply launches as normal, flies to the closest Rebel space station and declares. He will then be Overt until the next time he lands.
Neutral Joe is also a Neutral pilot (he has problems with commitment
). He decides he wants to check out PVP and has some Imperial friends that are getting ready to get started. All he has to do is launch and fly over to the Imperial Space station to become Overtfor the Empire. As soon as he lands he is back to being Joe Neutral.
Does that clear everything up?

What the hell are you talking about?
If you're netural, you'll get neutral space missions. As an Imp, my missions were mostly to kill neutral ships. A friend who was neutral had more missions against Rebel ships than I did.
And your combat skills affect any target, whether it's an NPC or PC. /eweapons is very nice against other players.

Easy to explain, if you group with an imp as neutral yu can do the PVP missions so long as he takes them.
Neutral combat skills are skills that do things like trap pirates. Explain to me how something that attracts NPCS will work on players?
I was talking about for PVP, you dont get PVP missions as neutral unless your grouped with someone who is in a GCW faction so unless you want to RPK overts you will either have to group with someone who can do these missions or find people, you wont get pk missions.

Um, I'm still not followong you either. The Pirate trap calls NPCs to help you set a trap, similar to the Imperial Bober strike command.
The only PVP missions are for the last two to get Ace Pilot, and everyone has to do them, including the Neutrals.
As I and others stated earlier, you can declare yourself overt in space, with or without a group.
So, uh what are you saying?

There are no missions where your targets are other players. There are 2 master-level missions that take place in a PvP zone, but your targets are NPCs. Neutral pilots when entering a PvP zone have to declare their alignment before entering the zone. If they're grouped with an Imperial/Rebel, then it'll set them to that faction, but if they're solo the space station will ask.
As for pirate trap, that causes some pirate fighters to hyperspace in to your current position. They will then do the pirate thing and attack anyone, player or NPC.
