Thread: Tier 5 Gunboats in Kessel

Quick question, are there any good tips for dealing with the natural spawn Tier 5 gunboats in Kessel?

I'm 4/4/4/4 Rebel running my regular X-wing, using 2 ~2600 damageweapons, WO3, CO3, RO3, EO3,CTSS4and went out last night to do the first master mission. I got down to about 12 kills left of the 30 without a lot of trouble. Had a couple break offs while chasing Aggressors, to give me a second to get shield power back in my forward shields, but otherwise, it wasn't bad at all.

Got involved with a Tier 5 gunboat though and got chewed. It was regular spawn, not on rails, and no matter what direction I attempted to approach from, swing around to, etc, it would turn to bring its upper guns to bear on me. I tried boostering in and rolling fire, strafing through and it seems that even 1 or 2 hits on my forward shield cleaned them out and I was rolling away, having done minimal damage. The only time I could approach from the underside is when it was distracted by natural spawn Rebel ships, but as soon as I was in range, it would roll to bring its top guns up.

Finally it got a couple clean hits on me on my 3rd or 4th pass and it did enough damage to my reactor that I had to call it a night, with just a few kills needed to finish the mission.

Obviously I should skip the Gunboats when doing this master level kill task, however, is there a good way to deal with these guys? They seem to track on you and turn to keep their tail and underside from being exposed, but I don't like having something that tends to outdo me in game. I'm a longtime flight sim player, so that annoys me.

Alexs step guide:

DO NOT SHOOT GUN BOATS! RUN AWAY

kill 30 TIEs, or bwings...

Get out

Get friends, master pilot

Buy Firespray

Buy dual space bomb launchers

Load up, get some friends and get even with those ruddy gunboats

If you want to get them the easy way then do the following:

Approach the gunboat from behind... when you are about 900meters behind it match your speed and step one step above it... with this low speed aproach until you are with 570meters... now open fire... from this distance the gunboat´s fire will not hit you very much anymore... Take out all of the gunboats subsystems (Shield/Engine first preferably).

Keep firing until you see it blow up...

repeat with next gunboat

Make sure you have "Capacitor to Shield shunt" in you droid, so that you can recharge your shields if it becomes necesary....

Good Luck!

btw... If you need assistance with you master mission, give me a /tell... I did it so many times... I fly through it blind by now

Gunboats are blind beneath and slightly behind... you can run up to them from there firing the whole way, dip down and back up and do it again...they never get a shot... course if they turn or roll you need to get outta there... but either way they're easy

  • Strafing runs

  • Shield front adjust (droid program)

  • Massive firepower

  • Disable engine first

That's pretty much it for these kind of gunboats for solo.

If you bring something witha turret and a fellow player in the turret then it's a simple matter of agroing it and start flying 550m in front of it, killing it with your turret. You won't get hit at all.

Thanks Washell, that'san interesting one, though it sounds like the only good tips for soloing it are Forward Shield Adjust (need to get a new astromech, my current one is topped out on overloads) and heavier guns.

Unfortunately the two strategies prior to that ignore the fact that I'm not talking about straight flying, on rails gunboats. I'm talking about the ones that aggro you, and roll their guns towards you if you try to fly at them from the rear or bottom. I know the 570m thing, it works great if the target doesn't turn, but these do.

gunboats are nothing more then flying XP, before you do your corvette run, fly around and do some test runs on single boats in the kessle system. you will discover the sweet spot. after 2 or 3 of them you will beable to disable the 2 behind the corvette no problem. i soloed the corvette with my tie advanced, nothing special on it, just takes time, don't be in a rush to kill everything, pick off the escort fighters, then the gunboats then move in on the vette.

remember if you start you attack when the vette enters kessle you have plenty of time to take it down.

Just ignore them, people read how to kill a gunboat and hit reply to start talking about 550m and blind spots without reading the rest of the post. Happens in every thread about gunboats.

There are 3 kinds of gunboats patterns in Kessel.

Travelling on rails- dealt with above, but not your problem

The short oval gunboat- there is one ship in kessel that flies on a really short oval pattern.Probably not the one you mean, but tricky to deal with when you're not in a turreted ship with a gunner. I generally avoid this fellow unless I've got a gunner, but using a methos similar to what I outline below might work.

The Leftovers- Leftovers are the remains of a corvette spawn that someone didn't kill all of. Most often two tightly circling gunnies consistently looping and providing cover fire for each other, but I have often seen a single leftover, or leftovers plus escort fighters. If some naughty person destroys a corvette and not the excort, you get these. If you want a 'vette to spawn, these must die. There is only one safe way to take care of them. Similar to the fly behind at 550m method, you watch the pattern from a safe distance, and just where the point of the loop closest to you is. fly about 550m from where the gunbots circles close to you, stop dead. Plink at the closer ship each time it loops around until its dead. If they fire back, you're too close (obvious). I normally hate taking advantage of the range differential (feels cheesy especially when using legitmate blindspots means faster kills), but in the case of a bugged spawn, I don't hesitate.

From your description, I would guess it was the short oval pattern one. When I first entered Kessel, there was one not far from me with 3 NPCs attacking it. I joined in and did some damage but then the NPCs died and I hauled away. Came back a few minutes later and it suddenly poofed (like it Hyperspaced) and I was given kill credit, faction, and cash for, which I thought was really odd. Without 2 minutes the one I was talking about appeared. about 2k away from where this was and started flying in a general area. It was not a Vette Leftover and it was definitely not on rails. It did turn, but it might have turned on a short rail pattern of circles, I didn't watch long enough. This one definitely rolled completely over to protect its belly no matter where I approached from; however, I swear I also thought I turn this pitch over to bring its nose onto my path of attack as well.

Ah well, thanks all. I'll ignore them for the time being till I finish my master missions.
