Thread: eta on a targeting system that works?

Now that CU is here, can we get any eta on a space targeting system that works? the green reticule thing has been way off on many ships, especially in 3rd person view since jtl came out. It would be nice to get a targeting system that performed like the movies.

PS. There will be flames to this post because of all the JTL bandwagoners who refuse to accept the fact that JTL is lacking. They'll say "learn to aim", "learn to fly", "learn to adapt to jtl". I say bring it on. But you cannot deny that the green reticule does not work. If you take a look at XvT you'll see they properly adapted the movies' targeting system almost identically.

The green reticle thing is based on the enemy's speed and vector. It doesn't take inertia into account. This means it's pretty accurate on light enemies and way off on the heavies. I've learned to compensate for that and have no trouble gettinga hit ratio of 75 to 90% with guns (not visible in-game, just counting my shots).

I don't mind if theychange it to include inertia, won't make anybody a better or worse pilot.

I see the "target lead indicator" when Im in combat but I dont actually aim for it. Its more of a directional guide for me when sometimes its hard to see the enemy change directions in the heat of battle. Im alot more accurate than that thing is on my own anyways.

The targeting reticule isn't terribly accurate to be certain, but I think the more pressing issuein regards to aiming is the lack of laser convergence. On ships with wide laser separation strange tactics are necessary in order to landa hit.

the Predicted Target retical if a Guid only, it only predicts where the ship will be by the time your blaster bolt hits. its all just skill after this, i mean most space combat games use this system and its not always 100% this is why its a Predicted targeting system.

i recently started privateer pilot... and the reticule works perfectly, especially in third person view. YET it still does not work on rebel chassis. I think this is a BUG/ISSUE, not just a matter of taste or preference. The big problem is that in third person mode, the targeting reticule does not move on rebel ships, but on neutral ships it moves based on your heading... BUG

I used the lead indicator thingy by aiming the blue thing (the cursor) at it, putting the center of my targeting reticle usually right where it needs to be. It doesn't work for bigger ship like people have said, but a lead indicator can't be perfect, JtL would be too easy.

Key words highlighted. The reticle works best the slower the NPC ship is going. Let me know if it still works perfectly when you're facing tier4-5 Black Suns, then we can talk. As was said, its an approximate guide at best.

my point is on tier 1-2 rebel chassis, it doesn't work in third person. try getting back to me when you've read what i've said.

Strange, tier 1 and 2 were my best tiers. Are you setting the throttle to half speed while fighting? That helps a lot. And about the reticle not moving, I didn't know it was supposed to. Try pressing Num Lock, that lets it move.

I did read what you said, and it doesnt hold up. The reticle is nearly perfect on low tiers for ALL ships, for exactly the reasons I stated. 1st person, 3rd person, privateer, rebel, imperial, I've flown them all. Reticle innaccuracy is a direct correlation to relative velocity and delta velocity. The only ship based factor would be weapon convergence, and that has to do with the size/shape of your hit box, which is a separate issue. Has nothingto do with the placement of the lead reticle on a targetedNPC.

AH, you telling me all this time my targeting reticule didn't move because i had pressed numlock at some point?! LOL!!!

anyhow, as far as rebel, imp, etc...

most of the good rebel ships (good mass that is) have wing mounted guns with no convergance... and the hit box as you're saying... IS WAY OFF... which maybe that is what i'm talking about... i'm not sure..

all i know is THIS : Rebel ships suck a big goat nugget compared to every other ship in terms of accuracy. ALSO they suck because they have a much larger profile than any imperial ship. (except a wing but really it only has 1 gun and very limited mass)

Not that it matters much i guess, i've moved to imperial and picked up privateer/rsf. Which all of the privateer ships have flown GREAT with great accuracy as well.

When ships turn into you and fly in angles you have to adjust. Other then that yeah its been inacurate in those instances, but I have been pretty accurate with my targeting systems.

Just takes a little getting used to it.

If it flies strait without coming in on a mergethen you are hitting it pretty much dead on.
