Thread: Who designed the Y-8 anyways?
Probably the same person who knew he would never ever ever have to try and actually mine in it.
*filed under "I saw this coming months ago and posted almost those exact words even before it was ingame"*
They would have been much, much better off being put slightly back and below the cockpit, on those steeply angled faces on the left and right of the ship. It seemed like such the obvious place for turrets that I had assumed up until launching my ship today that that's where they were going to be. Having to point straight 'up' to shoot forward is asinine and stupid, at least with the way our turrets move in this game.
But it's moot anyway. I can't see out of my windshield in the Y-8 anymore, and I still can't do any mining by myself in it (the guns hit the asteroids but nothing ever breaks off).

Yep. Worst. Turrets. Ever.

I had that problem too... but I found a sek-rit.
You MUST have SOMEONE sitting in the pilot's seat at all times in order for the mining turrets to function properly. As soon as the pilot stands up, the turrets cease to knock pieces off the asteroid, although they still fire. Tested it in my Decimator a few moments ago.
The turret gunner was able to mine successfully, as long as my butt stayed put in the pilot's seat.

Here's how the Y-8 should work. I'm no mining ship engineer, but if I could think of this surely realy mining ship engineers would come up with it too, or better:
1) The pilot flies up to the asteroid and points the big ship right at it. Using the massively huge enormous pilot gun, the pilot starts blasting the big enormous asteroid. Since neither one is going to move for the next hour, the slow turning of the Y-8 doesn't matter and lets the fixed-forward pilot gun maximize its usefulness. The pilot breaks up the main asteroid.
2) The two side turrets (because there's no front turrets, they're on the side in Should-Have Land) independently track the rock chunks which break off and start blasting them into smaller, collectable pieces. Some collection is done by the side turrets too, but mostly it's the job of...
3) The rear turret. Smaller pieces drift past the ship out into space, where the rear turret's tractor beam pulls them into the cargo hold. The tractor beam, actually being a simple-to-use tractor cone (remember, this is Should-Have Land) rather than a precision surgical ray, excels at the collection stage, especially when there's lots of debris out at once.
4) The top turret can optionally serve as defense, additional mining laser power, or even as a second tractor beam, depending on the needs of the crew.
5) Engineers, after 2500 years of complaints, class action lawsuits and factory recalls, finally install flash baffles onto mining lasers so that gunners can both see what they're aiming at and shoot at it at the same time.
Until the Y-8 works in a way somewhat like that, it's not going to be an effective mining vessel. It's hard enough getting six people into a ship, the mining part shouldn't be hard too.
I've never got it running from ANY turret at all on Eclipse. Tractor won't work on Kryat, YT1300, Y-8, Decimator... And what I meant by "won't work" is the effects happen, they fire just fine, its just they dont' DO ANYTHING!
Am I doing something wrong? Do I NEED mining grade capacitors/reactors and so on to make Y-8 Mining laser work?! Saying that, MkIII Mining lasers won't work off turrets either, since there's only one tractor beam....
Anyone else having my trouble?

A few times I have not been able to get Mk III mining lasers to fire in the turrets, but if I raise the gun just a little they will fire. Not sure if that is your issue or not. I don't have mining grade capacitors or reactors (though I now have elite in both spots) and was able to fire before and after the change.

Equipment works fine, however, I would avoid trying to use it in a turret. The fact that they seem to have forgotten to assign turret graphics to most of them on most ships is probably your problem.
Other reasons something may appear not to be working:
Bugged rock- if chunks arent coming off, keep shooting and /examine the big rock to see if the hit points are dropping.
Tractor Beam- its a common rookie mistake to attempt to tractor medium sized chunks. The tractor is for hauling in small chunks, as opposed to collecting vaporized particles (which is what plain shooting is. Shoot the correct target, and your tractor will work fine.
