Instead of selecting "Repair Ship" off of a targeting reticule, how about if you have a set reuseable tools (hydrospanner, lazercutter, welding tool, etc), you can look on a data screen to find the trouble spot, go to it, and then select to "fix" it.
Select this and a screen comes up with a visual (edit: a sceen with actual visuals such as actually seeing the wires and small components), and it will be easy to see what is wrong. Such as: Crossed wires (hydrospanner), damaged wires (lazer cutter to cut frayed ends, then use another length of wire to weld it too), Damaged pieces (remove the piece and replace it orrebuild it).
so what do you think? i realise this would be hard to program but would add some content to the game.
Edit: fixed extra "a" in title
Edit: further explanation

i think repairs should be done by shops that ARE managed by the engineers that make the ships into first place....its kinda like the smuggler profession...it might require more detail but its doable...more interesting than just click "repair" and do it...well..in space that would work best...but on the ground before u head out..

actually, i got this idea while watching Empire Strikes Back, i could work in space with the multiperson ships but not with the smaller ships. i dont exactly know how they would call the ship on ground though...

Walk-in Hangers operated by Shipwrights?.
Sounds like an interesting idea...but we know so little little about the nitty gitty in JTL that it would be hard to compare all the factors...
Inspace repairs thought would certainly add a new dimanetion to the game...especially on multi-passanger ships and (If the game goes in that direction...) capital ships.
What concerns me thought is what negitive side effects there might be...not just in this but ship mateience overall, the idea that our prized YT-1300 may end up degrading to nothing in a matter of weeks or simply spontaniously blowing up is not desireable...

Not a bad idea, but of course like many of the brilliant ideas some of us have in this forum, I highly doubt SOE will cast a blind eye at the idea...they already have their agenda down.

what would make it more do able and beliveble on ground is haveing the shipwright or starshipengineer being able to place a 'hanger' type building just like a doctor can place a hospital and an entertanier/musician can place a cantina/theater. that way there is interdependencies created throughout the community as wel....for example, you hafta place the 'hanger' in a city, interaction there, architect must build the 'hanger', again interaction, and the SW/SE will be able to a) fix basically anything while he is there, or b) purchase a repair droid or some such and program it to help repair while he is not there or to take orders/hold on to ships and give out rentals
...k now im going to far.....but i hope you get the idea....i think its an idea atleast.

good except that you'd have to wait if the sw/se wasn't there, not a lot of people will like that. I think smugglers should be able to slice efficentcy on modules just like weapons and armor to raise them above their base stats.

I like the idea of a player citys having hangers, If nothing else so people can launch there ships instead of traveling to a starport. Limit them to launching ships only, and not planet to planet travel.

i think they could implement some sort of inflight repairing. although you would only get to repair certain things. like components and systems, not hull condition. i mean in the multiships you could just walk around to the trouble spot or something...or your astromech on the xwing .. dont know about ties though lol

That'd be cool to have. Instead of the stupid repair tools like droids have make it so you fix it yourself. It'd keep people in the game a little longer and give them some more to do. Plus it'd bring in like a real life situation type thing.
