Thread: Advise for new pilot that thinks missions are too hard

Hi -

Just wanted to give some hard learned advise to new pilots who keep getting owned on missions. I have seena few posts with newer pilots complaining that missions are too hard to complete.

I found the key for me was to make sure to get the best components your ship can handle, and take the skill path that allows you to use higher rated components first.. even before taking the box for better fighers. In my experience this helped a lot. The stats on components can vary -- sometimes a level 3 component is better than the same level 5 type component. The baazar usually has some components (Bria - Tatooine/Bestine) that are much better than the looted components in space.

Anyway, this is just my experience so far as a 1/2/1/1 pilot, hopefully others will add to this advise, or correct any mistakes in my post.

Hope this helps out!

I'd have to debate picking up the equipment box first as being something you should ALWAYS do, though ... it depends if the ship will give you more, and there's even an argument to make for taking 2232 as Imp for Bomber Strike.

or 2223 in any faction to get a flightcomputer/astromech that can hold the 5 droid commands.

Still, if you want to keep it simple. Picking equipment first is good advice.

In the first 3 tiers, Equipment is key for a new pilot. It's the easiest way to get the biggest advantage, and the missions are designed to be completed by someone using tier appropriate gear.

Picking tactics for a Special that will only be situational use? meh

Picking droid commands when all you really need are Engine overload3 and weapon overload3, and those can fit in a Lvl2 computer? meh.

These are foresight based decisions for pilots who are doing their 2nd+ squad. If a new pilotpicks one of them, and then can't get past the 2nd tier3 mission because your shields and weapons are below grade, then someone will more than likely have to help them past a mission they more than likely could have soloed.

In the first 3 tiers, where there are player crafted baseline equipment choices that offer significant gains, the equipment box is an undeniable choice. Best bang for your buck.

Tier 3 BE without CtSS? Ouch

I do agree though, best choice first 3 tiers on the first time round is equipment.

I recently started on my second teir of space missions, and couldn't even do one. They wanted me to face off against a gunboat - ha! Not a chance. That thing chewed me up before I could even get close enough to fire. Going to save all my xp now for the improved components.

I'm not complaining though - I definitely like things tough. Too easy, and it gets boring and repetitive. I'll figure something out to beat that dang gunboat!!

what squadron are you in? What are you flying? What droid commands are you using? What skills do you have at the moment?

I'm not sure what squadron I'm in. I started out with the Mos Espa trainer, and now am with the major at Yavin-4. I'm 1-1-1-1 right now, flying a B-Wing (not the longhorn). As for droid commands, I always make my rear shield stronger than front, and then transfer energy over to whichever shield is getting damaged. I just got the skills to jumpstart someone and to confuse enemy tracking. I'm a n00b.

may want to try and get cap to shield shunt 2 or 3 and weapon overload 3 off of a vendor or have a privateer pilot make you some with some unprogrammed droid moduals.

Wish i could help you on the tactics for taking out an imp gunboat but im imp, so i have never fought one.

Also try and make strafing passes and hit boosters as soon as you pass the ship, then come around again for another pass after your shields recharge (ctss helps here). Try and focus on either the bow or aft of the ship so your concentrating your fire.

oh and btw its the y-wing and the y-wing longprobe

I found more satisfaying to get a TIE Interceptor, instead of keeping a TIE with a better shield, etc. Plus I alredy had the XP banked to even Tier 4 so...

I've found that my most important Droid Commands have been EO3, and WO3, with CtSS and COx following, regardless of my Pilot Faction Tree. I Fit those two in at Tier I and pick up the others as I go.

But, I don't think Boxes, nor debates about which ones to take are at the heart of "Good" advice for Young Pilots. REading the forums Would be, particularly the stickies in Pilot. Go out, get the feel of your craft, load your mind with questions, beat your head against the wall of frustration and then get thee to the Boards! Read, Read, Read

Go Back out, try again. And again. Hone your questions down, refine your searches, and focus your efforts. ONe step at a Time. Do some missions, do some more reading, some more missions, then, get cocky, get in over your head, and slam right back into that wall, and go read!

Which Boxes to take first, which ship to fly, which Droid Commands to use, these are All strategies more apt for those who have been here before. They are models for how Quick to regrind, not neccesarily for how best to learn to fly for, that is exactly what you must do as a new Pilot... learn to fly.
