Thread: Strange bug with JTL; specifically, targeting! Anyone experience this either?

Hey Folks,

I think ulitmately this is something I should turn over to support, but I wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing either of theseissues. I don't get them every timeI play, onlyoccationally (about 30% of the time).

1) Targeting sights are off -When this occurs, even though I have my sights linedup PERFECTLY (I mean, on the money-bullseye), the shots still go right through the ship. This is particularly evident when the box-to-aim-at is much ahead of the ship that I am attack. The only way I can hit a ship when this is happening is when I am either right behind it or by aiming somewhere between the box and the ship.

2) Bizarre flight patterns - Sometimes I ships will move in a way that is just not possible: 90 degree turns, unnatural reverses, and a general appearance of bouncing through space.

1) does your throtle go to 0 the back to full and you rubberband back a few metersand suddenly your aim is back?

if so this is the server resyncronizing with your computer. a lot of people have this problem, only soe can fix it

(poor network coding?)

2)poor AI programing

I believe these are server sync. problems, and is a work in progress.

Well I am experiencing this too,but Icaulked up to lag. The problem with targeting is separate from this though.

It's weird, sometimes even a ship will be disabled andI am dead in space shooting at it through perfectly lined up sights and still miss it. Aaargh!

But again this is only sometimes. Other times is works fine.

Well, it's programming of some sort This behavior is again only occational and particular since the ways in which these ships move is not possible. I'm talking about full speed reverses or 90+ degree lateral turns. When this is happening, it's almost like the ships are bouncing in random directions through space.

I have a bug while targeting in SooruSuub, lets say I target something behind me, the cammera will lock in that position until I get out of the pilots seat.

Well, it seems like there are some JTL defects already. It would be nice if someone from SOE would at least let us know if theyare documented. It would help with thisfeeling ofhelplessness that is growing in my stomach.

One thing about bizarre flight, is if you are near the edge of the space sector the ships can fly into the invisible wall boundary and this makes them fly realy crazy. They skid along it all sideways and its almost impossible to hit them until they clear away from the wall.

Interesting. That behavior sounds exactly like what I have experienced, butwhen it happens, it happens so consistently, that Idoubt it can bea boundary issue.

What causes this problem is that the ship your are shooting at is in a different place on the Server than it is on the client. What you're shooting at could be a few meters ahead of wht you're shooting, or a few meters behind. This is lag.

This is also what causes your ship to throttle to 0 every so often... on your computer, your in one place, but the server is tracking you a few meters behind... so the server corrects this by warping you a little bit back to where it thinks you are.

Interesting. I'll try to min my bandwidth use while playing and see if that helps.

My favorite it flank side shots... I'll pound into a ship from its side... and do exactly zero damage... I can see the shields flare from the hit... but I do exactly no damage to shields, chassis, armor, or systems... nothing... emptied a capacitor doing that many times...

/eyeroll Canned response there?

Actually, it's lag that is causing the AI to do that. I noticed it was a little worse last night. I never get it, because my system is sufficient, but some others in my guild were.

NOTE: We were shooting at the same target. It was doing it to him, but not to me. So it's more client-side.

Poor AI programming...pfft...

Well, I did some experimenting last night, and with some tools that I normally use to test software performance, I was able to throttle down mynetwork traffic andcontributed the problem tolag. I think what was said about the server and the client (my computer) tracking different locations of the ships is exactly right.

The problem does seem occur whenever my ping is over 200. To correct the problem:

  1. Disconnect from the game
  2. Shell to a terminal prompt
  3. Run"ipconfig /release"
  4. Run "ipconfig /renew"
  5. Reconnect to the game.

Almost alwaysmy ping will drop down to 50 or so and the problems disappear.

The bad part about this is that there is no indication to theplayer that the poor network connectivity is an issue; the game runs perfectlyexcept that my shots going right through them.
