I'm trying to do the advanced x-wing missions and am stuck on the first mission given be the yt-1300 veteran. I make it through the fighter waves with no problem, but the gunboat proceeds to kick my tail. What's really grustration is that the gunboat seems ridiculously fast. It easily runs me down in both my a-wing and my x-wing doing approximately 750-866 speed. Is there a DETAILED guide somewhere explaining how to kill one of these by myself or with a friend? I've tried to hit it with a level 1 space bomb, but the stupid thing is so fast that I cant get a lock on it before its flown by in a head on pass. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Advanced Xwing mission is given by the rebel station in same sector. Dialog option, "im looking for a challenge".

Best tactic against an Imperial Gunboat is to come up behind it, and just a little above it's horizon and take out the rear turret (number 2 i think, but its been a while) then take out the engine and you can camp back there and shoot it till the space cows come home and the other turrets cant touch you.

This is assuming that this hasnt been fixed.

You don't have to kill the gunboat for that mission. With good timing the gunboat might not even spawn. You just have to let the vette get within roughly 6000 meters of the station before disabling it.

Huh, I've been helping a fried do these missions for the Heavy X-Wing where he has to disable the corvette, and we've done it like three times and never even SEEN a gunboat. We kill the fighter escorts, then start blowing the turrets off, but the thing always jumps out of the system before we can disable it.

Are we doing this completely wrong and missing something important here?

Only one gun needs to be disabled on the corvette, If I remember well that's gun 5 which is the only gun under the corvette. Next is both shields and then the engine. The rest of the gun can stay, so it can defend itself afterwards.

Don't wait too long though to disable it. The closest it is to the rebel station, the most chance it will hyper away.

Tier5 mission gunboats are notoriously hard. They aren't dumb, are way too fast, and chase you down. They are harder than corvettes.

Personally, I don't know what they were thinking when they put these guys into a duty mission. I barely escaped the rebel gunboat doing 990. These things are blazingly fast.

That much said, the only way to beat these guys is to keep dying until you develop the skills and techniques needed to beat them.

Remember, you want to manage the battle. You don't want the battle to manage you.

Your first lesson: Go faster.
Second Lesson: Get help. Bring friends. Mark the locations of Rebel spawns and flee towards them.
Third Lesson: Break aggro. You can do this by hyper-jumping in-system. The gunboat will "lose" you and you'll buy a little breathing room.

Good luck.

Ducimus is right, you seem to be doing the wrong mission. That said, I was able to complete "capturing the stoling Corvette" 3 times tonight buy just letting the gunboats attack the vette. I cleared all the fighters, used IFF scramble to get the gunboats to ignore me, and waited about 2000m behind the vette as it made its way to the station.

Only one of those times did the reactor (the only part you need to worry about that I can see) take any damage at all, and I think it was from the fighter that lived to long rather than the gunboats. In theory, if you're really unlikely you might loose the vette, but 2 or three tries should be enough.

If you want to improve your odds, bring 2-3 suicidal friends. When you get down to just the boats have them "lure" each one away (trying to lure them yourself WILL fail the mission, don't do that). This is done by firing at the boat to get it's attention (perferably at its maximum distance from the vette) and then run like hell. Hold the boat at 800-1000m using match speed (you must have a top speed of 900 or higher, these guys are FAST). When you get far enough away that the vette disappears from visable range, make a hyper jump back in.

I did this last night. I figured I will never kill those 3 gunboats in any of my ships so I took the A-wing because it's hard to hit and it's fast (I was going about 1300 speed with engine overload 3). I took out the enemy fighters and distracted the gunboats. I actually disabled the vette early, I didn't think about disabling it at 4000m from the Rebel Outpost. To disable the vette, just go directly behind its engines (the blind spot) and match speed with it. Target the shields and fire missiles at them. I used Mk.2 Concussions. 3 missiles on the primary shield and 3 missiles on the secondary shield. Then target the engine and kill it with your blasters. Don't kill any guns on the vette and stay behind it until it is captured.

That doesn't work for these mission gunboats, they chase you. They're even harder than spinning gunboats in kessel or even the vette itself.

I joust them. Target engine, fly straight at it, roll, jink a little, fire blasters constantly, unload any ordinance. As soon as you go through it, hit booster and cap shunt. Keep going straight shunting your shields back to nearly full power. Repeat until it disables. Then go to the blind spot underneath and take it out.
