Here's my theory on why this can happen. Go into space, and do the /target command on anyone. It will show their ship in the display. do /target self. You avatar, in straddle position, as if ridinga mount, is shown in the target display. Fly around someplace for a while and see if you see a light blue or purple dot on the radar. Get as close as you can without overshooting it (on radar). Then slow down, and move in as slowly as possible with it centered in radar. If you get close to it, you'll see a character floating in space, just standing there.
I think the ship is just a second "character" placed overtop of the first, and maybe there's just some weird time displacement going on in the transition from space to ground. Maybe in this case it was freak timing, or maybe there's an actual timed window between when a character physically is removed from the space zone and placed in the ground zone, or maybe the explosion is generated and maintained client-side in the current position of the player owning the craft, regardless of that player's server state.
Does that make any sense :-/?
