On the different generations from 1st to 5th, what are the advantages and disadvantages of them? I read or heard somewhere that most people prefer the 1st gen's over the others

1st gen are preferred for grinding xp.

3rd and 4th gen are preferred for pvp. There is no 5th generation saber!

As you go up the gen's then damage and force cost.increases

So the reason you heard ppl prefer to use gen 1 instead of gen 4 is due to the force cost. A gen 4 will drain your force bar faster than a lower gen but your damage output increases. Most ppl grind with a low gen saber to conserve power for healing / force run etc.

You know, in my day...I was one of the highest post counts.
Highest post count on Eclipse, well, if I kept posting, I definately would, I don't know about now.

Noob jedi here,

My basic understanding of saber generations is the amount of pearls or crystals you can fit in the hilt. And, each pearl or crystal has its own force cost.

My questions are:

1. Is the above assumptions correct or overly simplistic?

2. What would be the bennifit of having a first or second generation saber as opposed to a third or fourth?

3. How much "stuff" can you fit into each generation?

4. is there another post someplace that answers all these questions, plus other things I might not know to ask yet?

Training Saber: Only a color crystal

1st Gen: Color and one power crystal

2nd Gen: Color and two power crystals

3rd Gen: Color and three power crystals

4th Gen: Color and four power crystals

Each power crystal (white crystals/krayt pearls) increases damage, lowers force cost, and lowers speed, some also provide accuracy bonus/wound bonus (not sure if any of em still do but they can)

Only benefit to having a 1st/2nd gen is that the base force cost is lower, so you can use it for grinding in, say, a spin group, without getting low on force. However, you need a 4th gen for pve/pvp because its the only thing that can get you high enough damage (it doesn't look like much however, the best sabers are 700 some max dmg, but that converts to like 1500 dmg with kd/ab/headhit)

ok here we go

to number one the answer is yes

to number two with each generation u move up u will get better damage and betterspeed but u will also get higher force cost. there is no big trade offs here either u want force cost or damage and 99% of the jedi out there go for damage and speed rather than force cost

to number three first gen will hold i pearl one color crystal all the way up to fourth gen and they hold 4 clear pearls and one color pearl.

Before the crappy CU we had to go step by step using training, 1st, 2nd, 3rd 4th generations in the exact order while levelling up to MLS. Now it's all level based so, if you can, go for the higher generation.

Would a third generation saber work with only 2 power crystals?

I can get my first gen down to 2 FC if that helps. Other than that, I see no reason to use lower gen sabers. Unless you just don't have the crystals or none are really that good. You should make whatever gen saber to compliment whatever crystals you have. If you only have 2 good low FC crystals, then use a 2nd gen saber. if you try to use a 4th with crappy crystals. then you could see 20-30 fc sabers easy and not really much more damage.
