Powers is good when you have a BH come after you (assuming you have the defenses to live long enough to attack). But if you ever plan to go into regular PvP, against other Jedi for the most part you'll be ineffective (since most have Aura which I believe has the force defense)

As already stated by others, it depends on your saber and your opponents.
Powers is pretty viable in PvE.
Powers is devastating against non-Jedi.
Powers is no threat to any Jedi with Force Aura, Force Shield, Force Feedback or Force Absorb. Most Jedi have at least one of those skills. This means Powers is a pure support profession in Jedi vs. Jedi PvP tasked with laying states on groups of enemies - unless you catch them completely off guard.
Bottom line: If youre mainly doing PvE with the occasional BH encounter, Powers is viable, especially if you have a crappy saber. Otherwise, stick with sabers.

This was the official statementabout the two disciplines.
* Force Wielder is intended to be a viable alternative to Lightsabers for Jedi offense. They now have "default" attacks with Force Hit and Force Strike and will also count towards kills for earning Jedi XP.
* Force Wielder powers are now considered ranged attacks. They are now resisted by ranged defenses as a result.
* Force Wielder powers now use Force Accuracy and Ranged Accuracy to determine their accuracy.
FORCE WIELDER
* medium range damage dealing (single and crowd)
* opponent control through snares and KD
* opponent damage reduction (single and crowd)
* single opponent stat debuff
* single opponent Force debuff
* limited location specific attacks (head only)
* Force DOT (incurable)
* stealth ability
LIGHTSABER
* close range damage dealing (single and crowd)
* limited medium range damage dealing
* single opponent control through states (all) and KD
* single opponent armor debuff
* location specific attacks
* bleed DOT
* limited ranged defense
Crowd control and support are over used descriptions with no validity. The only crowd control move we have is area KD, which MLS also had at the time this description was given.

THE TRUTH ABOUT MPOWERS
its for people who dont want to hunt krayts ewverday for a year, looting, tuning, throwing away 100s and 100s and 100s of pearls like the rest of us prew cu jedi did. its a easy alternative. you dont have to spend millions on resources, crafting suits,, saber tools, weapon machines, foods.
and honestly, if you go something like, mpowers enh 4402 heal4000 def 3040 78 inate armor, mdef only has 70
def 0340 your pick , you will be able to take a punch.
so do you want the 1 year saber grind, or the hell with it, mpower can take a punch grind.
but dont ask for powers to be as damage inflicting as sabers,unless they too have to do some kind of 1 year everyday powers grind to also somehow incorporate 4 pearls into a powers necklace or something like that.

With the CU, we're told it's a crowd-control/group support skill tree.
