Everyday, I see the same two people whining about how much they hate the combat upgrade, and the changes made therin, and others coming along with the opinion that the combat upgrade saved SWG. Well, it's time for me, flog, as usual to put an end to this silly little debate.

YOU'RE BOTH WRONG!

You see, before the combat upgrade, combat was broken. It was DoT wars, mind wars, and only had a few viable templates. The right template could just macro spam heal and spin until entire lairs of nightsister elders dropped around them. There is no question that the old system had it's share of problems including - broken specials, godlike buffs, lack of viable templatesand the other miriad of problems that caused players to whine for a year and a half to get fixed.

The reason I say both sides are wrong is that they are. The combat upgrade has it's own share of problems, and in many ways they are just as bad as pre-cu. Now grouping is necessary to explore some content (as it should be since the second M in MMO is MULTIPLAYER), and gone are the days of the uber DoT weapons and god buffs, but new problems have emerged. Things are still broken after the CU, including entire professions that are still not viable (squad leader, ranger, and commando). The combat upgrade moved the game, but while fixing many issues, it introduced a host more. The combat now requires more thought, and is more challenging, but without constant work by the devs, the CU will never be fully implemented, and will never work.

The debate ends here because what we should be asking for isn't a pre-CU system, but a combat system that works. We should be asking the greedy devs to quit working on an expansion every two months and start balancing this mess of a CU they dropped on us. I think they are trying to fix things, don't get me wrong, but SOE is more interested in getting you to pay 30 bucks for content you should be getting for free than pushing the devs to finish the CU.

Only when the CU is finished, will we know how things will pan out. Right now, we're in CU-open beta of the two year ongoing beta test of SWG.
