Thread: Blixtev/Baciacca: Solutions to the BH/Jedi problem (balance)

The very nature of what the BH profession is, and is allowed to do, as it is the only profession that has the power to force PvP onto another without consent, and the only profession that has the power to penalize other players for playing (xp loss) attracts a certain type of person to them. Now granted, MOST BH's aren't that way, but one must admit that they are the only distinct, legal, GREIFER class in this game, and thus, disporportionately attracts thet kind of player. Something needs to be done to rebalance this very unhealthy for the game interaction.

The posible solution(s) are obvious.

1. Remove forced PvP (make it elective whereby the Jedi get reward for victory, or give BH's NPC Jedi to hunt). I don't favor this option, it's not canon, and we should expect SOME pvp for the priviledge of being Jedi.

2. Keep the system as it is, but remove XP loss entirely (probably the easiest solution to remove the griefing aspect, and to give BH's the fight they claim they want). This is clearly the fairest "quick fix" solution, and any BH who decries this one is most likely one of the sadistic griefers. This might make a good "interim" solution until what I REALLY have in mind is done...

Now, the REAL solution, and the one Blix should be coding:

Balance the risk/reward so that BOTH sides face EQUAL risk/reward for success or failure. This is probably the most ideal solution, and the most balanced, but would take the most effort to impliment.

The plan:

* JEDI mission terminals would enter the game (it is reasonable that the Council would send Jedi to do something about BH's who are notorious for slaughtering members of the Order, right?) where we could hunt bounty hunters (npc and PC) ourselves for similar rewards and loot opportunities they get. The system would work the same way the BH system works, via informants and droids for simplicity's sake, and for balance.

* There would be no XP loss for either side on a defeat, but both sides would have to spend "prestige points" gained by wins in PC and NPC missions to take a PC mission (similar to the cost to enter Deep Space as a master pilot). A win in a NPC or PC mission gives prestige points based on the difficulty rating of the mission. The loser in a PC mission loses double the prestige points required to take the mission, and can go negative in points. Those who don't have enough points to take a PC mission can't, to reflect the lack of confifence the Jedi Council and the BH Guilds have in the player's performance and reliability until they
"prove" their ability by accumulating enough points. The higher the prestige the player has, the higher the level missions they get, with the better chance for good loot items, and higher payouts.

* Visibility as a mechanic would be completely removed as it exists now, all Jedi above Initiate and those with MBH would be on the terminals at all times, the frequency and priority they appear would be determined by the amount of "prestige points" they have accumulated (ie, the more "infamous" they become the more attention they attract, this gates this sort of PvP towards those who CHOOSE to participate, while still making participation by everyone possible and likely).

To prevent exploiting, prestige from Pvp kills are only gained and lost from missions taken from the terminals, and player names would continue to not be on the terms to prevent use of alt characters for exploiting, and to prevent intentional griefing.

* This same system could ultimately be used to add smugglers and others (such as those who slaughter faction NPC's in public places such as npc cities) on the terms, so it has a lot of flexibility. Jedi would ONLY be able to hunt PC BH's, only MBH's could get smuggler/faction killer PC mission.

This type of system would be fairest for both sides, and would foster a healthier competition between BH and Jedi player, while removing the "greifer" aspect. It would be a FUN POSITIVE EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH! Encounters would be unexpected and wouldn't have the kind of negative impact they have now. Jedi would put up a fight rather than run because they would have something to gain. Jedi wouldn't hide in houses, cloak escape, etc.

I think this solution answers almost everyone's objections.
