Thread: Oh! The Irony of it All!

Hi All,

Since my little /spank from the forum moderators, I've had some time to read (using other forum accounts) and think about what's been said about the Jedi grind, learning your template, and practicing with it, etc. A few moments ago, a very ironic thought occurred to me. /follow

At one one time, grinding Jedi was supposed to be a long, arduous process of endless kills of the same creatures over and over, ad nauseum, all the while solo out in the middle of nowhere (since we all know the path to Jedi is about killing, not "knowledge and defense" as one sage put it ). About the only difference between that grind and today's grind seems to be the time factor and that soloing is no longer necessary or viable.

So, here I find myself working my way down the last 9.6 million XP before I complete my template. I'm really looking forward to the day when this grind is done, and I can enjoy my Master Powers, LS x4x4, Enhancer 34x2, Healer 4xxx template, and start to have fun with it. Which is the whole point, right?

Of course, one must prepare for the inevitable visit frommy local neighborhood bullies... er, ... bounty hunters, so I'm thinking: "Once I finish my template, how best then to go out and practice my skills, figure out which combos work best in random-chance situations, get some timing down, and so on." And then it hit me: other than dueling practice, it's soloing creatures out in the middle of nowhere!

Oh! The bloody irony of it all!

I wholeheartedly agree.

That has, and hopefully will be, the continuing path to jedi. It is not that I want everyone to just experience the pain of soloing 1.2 milling mereks on Endor. It is the fact that, by playing a character through the developmental stages of a profession or template, one learns the do's and dont's that come with every profession's strengths and weaknesses. This even applies to crafting professions as well. For example, learning how to craft an elite rifle using available resources, blending them in such a way as to return a very good base, and place the experiment points in what is most desired fo the one using this finely crafted weapon takes skill...not a rapid grind of, oh, let's say, 2-3 days (and I am being overly generous with the time here). That was a problem with the holo grinding...not many spent the time and effort to learn and utilize their profession's skills.

The same hold true for jedi. I was saddened when creature death/loss of xps was removed, because it taught a valuable lesson to padawans learning the ways of the jedi. No jedi is totally invincible in all situations; learning what one can and cannot handle is the road to success.

My suggestion to padawans is to do exaclty that...learn what you can do and cannot do with the level at which you have attained. Do not just rely on a group for gather the 34.6 million xps for finished template...solo creatures....extend your force powers and skills...learn what to do and not to do.

I couldn't agree more with Sivart's responce. Grinding solo on Endor with the threat of cloning xp loss taught me many things that I feel many post-CU jedi are missing out on such as risk assessment, the finer points of force pool management, and having the opportunity to learn more about your skills. I'm not making a judgement that jedi now have it easier, just stating that the circumstances have changed and I feel that the current grind leaves a padawan little time or opportunity to really test and learn their skillset before the inevitable BHs come to visit.

I knew my pre-CU template VERY well (MLS/MPowers/4004 Healer) and people always wondered how I managed to fight for so long without channel or having someone transfer force to me...in short, I learned it on Endor after many, many hours of practice, testing, and repetition to the point where I knew when to pop some parawan and take off when I saw that I was getting in over my head or that I would not have enough force to win. Post-CU, I've swapped templates completely and am still learning my limits again the only way that I know how: I run right back out and attempt to solo everything I can and push myself to become better and recapture the intimate knowledge of my skills that I had with Powers.

As the old saying goes, "practice makes perfect"...I'm far from perfect and probably never will get there, but I am improving with every challenge, success, and failure. I urge padawans to run out every so often and solo a few lairs that could kill you. Without the risk (of pride, since xp loss on death/cloning in PvE is gone), I find that it's not enough of a challenge to really learn anything worth knowing.
