AUSTIN, TEXAS - On Thursday, April 27th 2005, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) abandoned its long term population control project after two years of successful experiments. Players of the popular Star Wars Galaxies game had no idea that they were the subject of a massive experiment testing the future population control of Star Wars fans and the world. "It was the perfect test bed", one developer said casually, "Players were so riveted by the rich content and exciting combat scenarios that they completely stopped breeding." This test was designed to illustrate the point that passive population control was actually possible without large government grants or secret projects. "Being a niche market, testing on Star Wars fans seemed like the best place to start", said another developer.
SOE pulled the plug on this experiment on April 27th, 2005 with the release of the "Combat Upgrade". The CU abruptly introduced an end to interesting content and combat in the game, thus leaving players in search of something else to do with their time, energy and money. "Ending this experiment was an easy task once we spoiled the milk" laughed one executive who refused to be named, "I'm sure that after a few months, they will go back to breeding again, but until then, they'll be in too much shock." When players were asked to comment about the CU and the experiments, most were too angry to make statements but several suggested that they're spouses and families were very pleased that the experiment was finally concluded.
