being a part of the gcw implies serving a specific higher cause, philosophically, and a superior officer, pragmatically. neither of these options should be available to jedi, based on the movies -i- saw. if luke skywalker was part of an organized military force and he just decided to "go off to dagobah" he'd be courtmartialed, not to mention how he just decides to turn himself over to vader and the emperor. it's true that jedi were -agents- of different factions, but their primary allegiance was always portrayed as "to the force" or to their "master (also a jedi)". darth maul served sidious long before he was the head of a "faction", and his service had nothing to do with sidious' political aspirations.
how does this apply to the game? what i think should happen is that instead of the usual 3 status levels - on leave, combatant, special forces - jedi should be in a different, "volunteer/agent" status with regard to general faction, and they should get missions from either luke skywalker or darth vader/emperor to perform _force-related_ faction tasks. this may include attacking otheropposite factionforce sensitives/jedi, or npcs, or other -mission- style activities -shoot, make securing certain force shrines for jedi of one faction or another a mission objective.
this will not only be more in line with the movies, but it will also cure the common GCW complaints.
i know there have been folks that have suggested that jedi have a 4th faction status, and that's part of what i am suggesting here too, but the important thing is that i think the rampant killing of opposite faction special forces during large scale pvp should not be available to jedi, but rather specific quest-centered content (pvp and pve) should be set up for them. basically make jedi only able to attack opposite faction jedi and npcs. this will still be able to occur during large scale pvp combat, but it will be a totally seperate war, which i think would be really cool. the dichotomy between the "rebel-imperial" conflict and the "jedi/sith" conflict is one of the things that made the movies so interesting. this could also be set up toenable jedi to serve whichever side of the force they wish, regarldess of "faction" obligations. after all, i would think that manydark jedi would not wish to serve the emperor, coveting his power for their own, and deciding the best way to achieve that goal would be to assist the emperor's enemies. likewise, i could imagine uninformed light jedi doing the emperor's will, since they would perceive this to be the most ordered role. shoot, during attack of the clones, the jedi council were all doing palpatine's will in setting down the seperatists when he was the leader of the senate. again, jedi were tools, agents, not directly politically active, nor directly militarily active. they did not report to anyone but their own kind.
i think that seperation should be made, and made specifically with regards to GCW envolvement.
just my 2c, recuperating from beta heh.
