say I were to loot a good pearl, would i still be hindered by the old range for good pearls, or is there a chance (even a small one) that i could get a "keepable" tune

There is a chance that any quality of crystal or pearl will tunenicely. I may not have the advantage of quality, but I plan on making up for it in quantity.
