I read Jon Smedley's interview this morning and, after reading the very first sentence I managed to draw my conclusion with 100% accuracy to what my hypothesis had been for the recent changes.
his first sentence: "LucasArts and SOE took a very close look at Galaxies to find out what we could improve and what needed to change to make the game more fun for existing players and what would make it APPEAL TO A WIDER AUDIENCE.
There in lies the rub my friends. The existing players do matter but are obviously not bringing in enough cash flow to make our opinion matter all that much. Mr Smedley goes on to comment on a small "sky is falling" crowd who did not like the first CU and do not like the second CU. The thing Mr Smedley needs to realise(by getting his head out of his ass) is that EVERYONE wants the old system back but, it is evidently too complex for taht WIDER audience he is commenting about.
SOE needed to dumb down the game so a wider audience would purchase and get hooked, but for how long? The game is going to be much lower in content due to the loss of so many professions and, there will be no more end game for most. The end game for most was of course making jedi and being as uber as possible. No more.
I conclude this posting by saying again, the game is being dumbed down to sell more copies. If you read in his article it says he wants the game to go on for 5-10 more years yet I see taht as a highly doughtful goal due to the shortsidedness SOE has shown it's best customers.

a friend of mine who quit right after the last combat upgrade said this which i find fitting : SWG had the potential to be the greatest MMORPG ever made, to bad it was all implemented with the foresight of Ray Charles.

The foresight of Ray Charles. excellent. well put. I suppose if the bottom line did not matter so much then, I bet anything swg could have been the greatest ever.
