In his keynote speech to the Austin Game Conference, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley put forth a bold new vision for the publisher, further breaking the traditions firmly laid since the launch of Everquest.

The company performed its first drastic about-face earlier this year when it launched Station Exchange, an online marketplace allowing Everquest II players to use real cash to purchase coin, items, and characters in auctions similar to those previously shut down by the publisher. Now Sony Online is taking the model a step further, and will be launching a new MMORPG in the fall of 2006 that eschews monthly subscription fees entirely, and instead plans to recoup its development and support costs by offering extra levels and upgraded items for users to purchase.

Smedley declined to comment further on the title, but, according to a newswire article, made special note of Station Exchange's "very meaningful revenue stream," and said the company sees this new free-play model as the ideal way to bring in an even wider audience that would normally balk at a monthly fee.

Gee maybe I could just buy a jedi and buy some flawless pearls instead of actually working for them lol. My goodness SOE is a sleazy company.

I felt a great disturbance in the Force...as if millions of
voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear
something terrible has happened. (Its called empty servers due to CU2)

Yeah, shame on SOE for trying to make money...what kind of business trys to make money? Bottom line, with as much complaining as everyone does, you're still playing arent you, still paying your monthly fees, arent you?

If you dont like it cancel. If you dont like an idea that the OP mentioned, then dont buy that game. Its actually quite simple.

If SOE wasn't making a profit they would shut the game down, looks likes they are making a profit despite your complaints.

There's a difference between loving what you do and therefore it brings in money and what SOE does. Companies typically smaller that are in it because they love games seemingly always make great games. Companies like SOE are fat bloated slugs and not a single gamer among them.

And I did cancel by the way, SOE will never see a dollar from me again. They have no love for games. Im going to smaller mmorpg like Fallen Earth once it launches where i know the devs run the show and not some monkey in a suit.

Its the love of what once was that still keeps me here. As long as cloak is not nerfed too badly I can still stand to play. PreCU I was always soloing, avoiding visibility. Now I just cloak and call it my PVE mode. A MBH that catches me with my cloak down I always hafta give kudos to. Kricky its been almost 2 years now, woot woot. But end of December I am taking a 2 month leave to take a pause and cancel the costs of Mustafar.. or like some people call it Mustalag.

Then again when I begin to work on pilot because the game if lacking elsewhere with the continued changes it makes me wonder.

How can you say you've lived life if you've never danced?
Well I do remember Han having a one piece suit made out of carbonite but it weighed a ton. Still it didnt require any ironing and was very wear resistant.
Thanks SOE! The CU and NGE gave me my life back. Thanks! Bitterness is the taste of love lost, a tear of acid that burns the heart.
Long gone, in sorrow of song. Stand I make to deliver hope with twisted temporal past, for the ripples in time distort what affects when. Prowlies a must see Clicky!
As a dreamer I sing to the sea and imagine the possibilities and potential this game could free, but when I get home a sad sight there be. A lost fool, for once was is gone, what could've been to never be, and the angel of my heart to be forgotten, locked away by the key of SOE.
