The fatal flaw to the SWG level system.

In a level based system levels should give you skill points, not, using skill points gives levels. Skill points giving levels is inherently flawed and exploitable (AKA Temploiting) it's impossible to balance. If levels gave skill points the system would make it much more challenging to achieve top level status and skill tree's would actually be a moot point, you could allow a person to choose skills instead of boxes [or boxes in any order]with each skill taking a different amount of points. It also allows you to enjoy level based content a lot more and frees up opportunities to take the system to a whole new level in general. It also allows the addition of new skills to the system to be easier to balance allowing new additions to the game at a much faster pace.

The Level=points system also make level based equipment more important, thus, it is more valued. You would also get the effect of getting a bunch of same level characters that would group together to enjoy their level content. You could also open the levels up to a higher cap at some point allowing you to take the game farther and farther.

I'll try to diagram an example

[Marksman Profession]

[Pistol efficiency] ##

[Rifle efficiency] ##

[Carbine efficiency] ##

[Combat efficiency] ##

Notice no boxes just a rating. Now as for actual "Specials", They would be skills andneed to be purchased with level points and also be dependent on the characters "efficiencies Rating" in the weapon that the "special/skill" belongs to [E.G. "Sniper Shot" would require X amount of points and a "Rifle efficiencies" of X]. you could expand this by allowing farther points to be placed in certain skills so that weapon efficiency and Skill efficiency would both be counted towardobtaining skill.

This system could be both effectively balanced and infinitely expanded open.

Yes they really screwed up with this one, personally regardless of the cost they should revamp the entire system to a hybrid of the d20 gamming system, which works great and would eliminate alot of the problems they have here.

There's two diferent thinkings when it comes to game design.

Level based school of thought says: You have too achieve certain goals [levels]to use certain content. This school of thought is seen in almost every game from clasic Dungens and Dragonsto World of Warcraft. It's a very valid and very tested design.

The Equalsschool of thought says: Everyonecan enjoy all the contentand obtaining skills makes you better at the content. This is the old SWG system.

The mistake comes when they tried to turn it into the Level system witha lot of the Equals system left in place. It looks balanced....untill the players learn the system.
