EA Japan to discontinue service of the LucasArts game; problematic sci-fi MMORPG to continue in US, Europe.

While American fans of the PC massively multiplayer online role-playing game Star Wars Galaxies eagerly await tomorrow's release of the game's next expansion pack, Star Wars Galaxies: Trials of Obi-Wan, SWG players in a region far, far away are feeling a disturbance in The Force.

On its Web site, Electronic Arts Japan, the game's Japanese publisher, is reporting that it is discontinuing its support for Star Wars Galaxies in the country. Apparently, Japanese gamers who wish to continue on will have their accounts transferred to American or European servers, which remain unaffected.

This isn't the first time the Sony Online Entertainment game has disappointed fans. In addition to bringing the ire of several (perhaps overzealous) fans over support issues, uproar over a recent update(publish 22)nearly started an online boycott of the game. The issue was eventually resolved, with SOE scrapping the planned update.

Obviosuly there wasnt enough Japanese players to justify it.

The Japanese were always smart people.

There must have been originally. I wonder what happened. What could have made so many leave that not ret even retaining one Japanese server was viable?

Japan was one of their big accounts. Hey Dev's get the HINT a whole country of SWG players have stopped playing due to your nerf wars against the jedi!

A lot of people in the US play this game simply because its Star Wars, and they can deal with whatever changes come down the pipelines. This game is locked into the crafter dominant player economy, and the bracketed level based combat system. Most people who are MMOers before Star Wars fans have left because this game can't compete with games that have more then 10,000 lootable items, and character levels that can be increasedeach expansion.

If Japanese servers are shutting down, that clearly means they weren't getting enough business out of them and that's not a good sign since Japan is HUGE on games.

And UGH I hope EA doesn't sign with LA if LA bumps off SOE, EA ruined BF1942 which started out as a great game and many of their recent games aren't all that successful aside BF2 and obviously the sport series.

OMG OMG THE SKY IS FALLING !!!!11111

Quote from Ackehece (Rifleman Correspondent):

"SWG Japan also was not SOE/LA

It was EA/LA

They are more being folded into the SOE system and EA is leaving the game. That is the big difference.

not really being shut down but brought into one house again.

The SOE in europe and americas and EA in japan and asia was stupid to begin with."

a pre cu grinded full temp jedi talking to a post cu any profession , is like a hore talking to a virgin. the virgin just wont get it, because a virgin cant talk about or miss, what they never have.

honestly, who cares about this game anymore????

i think most of us are just waiting on the release of all the new games coming. this game was DOA with the cu.
