Ugh....what a disappointment. Not that I am discrediting you or anything since I wasn't in Beta, but I really hope you're wrong about the new robes being cloaks. But hey, with SOE, anything's possible.

The whole "5 new robes" came about because someone was stripping data out of the .tre files we patch down to the client. Those "5 new robes" were test items made when I was rewriting the item system to include things like worn buffs, click items, and procs. 1 of the test itemsended up being the new Padawan robe everyone changed to on Pub 23. The rest of the test item robesbecame cloaks for the Mustafar team.

It wasn't an art "issue" per se. For some reason, they put robes into the third layer of character's clothing slot.. there are 3 layers.. the normal layers (shirts), secondary layers (jackets/cloaks) and third layer (backpacks/bandoliers). The devs who said this was an issue is full of it. All they have to do is make the Jedi robe a secondary clothing item, and we would be able to wear our backpack again.. Or make it primary clothing slot item, then we can wear our cloaks.

If there are going to be Jedi cloaks, then I seriously hope it will allows us to wear our ranking robes with a cloak over them.

Are they trying to make it far away from Star Wars as possible?
What about Aniken or Obi-Won, they both wore a cloak over there robes as padawans and knights.
Its a sense of disguise for a Jedi to wear a cloak, make them " Hidden " from the rest.

That is the conclusionI have come up with since we can have 4 sockets for SEAs in the current cloaks.
