I will be the first one to admit how crappy the game is. As of late I spend 75% of my time logged into my bh, 25% jedi and that ratio gets worse each week. Group pvp is so bad as well that I enjoy the 1v1's that bh'ing brings.

No they are not in any other fantasy game. Mezzes were called that because of the mesmerize line in everquest. A mezz stops all actions for a set period of time and breaks upon any damage taken.
Roots are 100% movement reductions that have a chance to break on damage and snares are a percentage movement reduction with no damage taken limitations. Blame 5 years played Everquest and 3 as an enchanter or mezzer for that info.
