So much of SWG is brilliant-- vast, beautiful, diverse worlds -- but saddled with problems thatsabotage one's appreciation for the underlying brilliance of it all. Enormous potential wasted by a bunch of clueless suits who can't direct the design of a good, well-balanced game to save their first-born's lives.

I want to toss out some discussion on the point I've highlighted in red here. Personally, I don't think players should be allowed to *direct* the shape of a game. Any creative process is an art that threatens to become boiled down to an unrecognizable grey mush if subjected to majoritarian pressures. And I think player pressure is a big part of why this game has so MANY problems. The problem is it doesn't seem to have a great game designer at the helm. In fact, it feels too much like NO ONE is at the helm. As a result, the devs are in constant crisis-control mode, and make change after change that pulls one element of thebalance down while they're trying to pull another part up.
An excellent illustration of the point is the Squad Leader brouhaha. One of the devs' stated goals is eliminating one-shot kills. And yet, the Squad Leader profession has languished for most of the life of the game. So great... give SL's some luv... and give players some cool rifles as loot items... and voila! Back to one-shot kills! Where's the guiding design goalin this mess?
I just think too many of the bad things that have happened to this game are the by-product of too much player input. Or maybe it's more the product of an inability on the part of the devs to take all the constructive feedback of a passionate community and think the issues through in clear-headed fashion.
