There are lots of non-jedi melee weapons in Knights of the Old Republic and even in some of the movies...lets see the Magna Guards from General Grievous or the Royal Guard...so don't tell me melee isn't part of Star Wars. Melee dominated pre-cu yes...but do they have to screw it up in PvP like they do now? If you ask me...no.
Melee should not be a dominating fighting style...SHOULD NOT....you're going to change my opinion on that. And I fail to see how it is screwed up...honestly. Not every melee fighter is going to...BAM..be insta-perma snared. I've seen it happen...it's not was easy as you make it sound.Melee in KOTOR was over-powered just like in SWG...completely stupid in my opinion.
Grievous is a super-organic-cybernetic hybrid of a being...who was trained by Sith. I can accept him using Lightsabers given who trained him. The magna guards were trained by him (most likely), and as such they would be extremely proficient with their polearms. Beyond that he was said to be an extremely bright tactician...so cybernetics + Jedi training + Lightsaber = one tough Mo'Fo. And, lest we forget...he still carried a firearm...a firearm that killed him where I lightsaber could not.
Outside of the force pikes of the Royal guard...there's very little melee' to be found in canon Star Wars. So what...we have... 2 examples? Not much of a part of Star Wars now is it?
I stand firm in my viewpoint. You want to swing abarbarian sword...go play WoW or EQ2 or whatever.
Star Wars is a world dominated by guns, and the only melee fighters who can stand up against gun fighters are the Jedi, who are possessed of SUPERNATURAL abilities and training.
Yeah thats right make ranged uber like melee was pre-cu... isn't that why you hate melee for? For being uber pre-cu? Well....forget it...it's senseless.

Right, but it's okay for melee to be overpowered? Right?
Melee is out of place in this game. If I wanted that type of fighting, I'd go play some lame fantasy MMO. You're clearly missing the point entirely. Melee is an inferior fighting style to Ranged in real life, yet it is able to dominate in a game that takes place in a universe that is filled with guns. THAT is senseless. I hate melee for being uber because it's STUPID. Watching a Fencer/TK/Swordsman stacker wither hailstorms of gunfireis beyond idiotic. I'll accept a Jedi doing it...but not a "normal" person.
Now...let's go to the next step...this is posted from another thread..something I wrote. Logic is ab ad thing on this forum, so I don't expect many to understand, but since you're calling me senseless and refusing to acknowledge any sense of rationale, here goes...my logic bomb...
And please...don't refute this with the "but this is just a game argument". I know it's justa game. And just like everyone else who whines and moans on these forums, I am entitled to my my opinion of how I want the game to be. You may not agree with my opinion, but you're not going to insult it, especially when I can reinforce it.
This is posted from the Squad Leader forums...someone thought SL should have been a melee profession...wrong forums for that idea...lol
"For...
...the...
...win
You know, normally, I'd jump all over the OP for making a statement like that....hell..I'd jump on anyone for even suggesting something like that, but I don't see the point Everyone here seems to be of a "sane" and rational mindset when it comes to the implementation of weapons in realistic combat situations.
I too would like Jedi to be the only melee profession in the game....save for pikeman...because I have a soft spot for pikes. If it were my way...there would be melee' in the game, but it would be relegated to some type of "supplementary" fighting style...if that makes sense. It would be useful in certain situations, but it would not dominate like it does.
I don't care what anyone argues, it is MY opinion that melee' dominant combat (save Jedi) has no place in a STAR WARS game where battlefields are rife with ranged weaponry.
Let's also not forget a fundamental FACT. A gun become incrementally more dangerous the CLOSER you get to its muzzle. That's why modern officers are issued pistols and not swords. Contrary to what Hollywood tells you...a gun is DEADLIER than a sword in Close-Quarters-Battle. Only in extreme cases, for example...a martial artist with years upon years of solid training and discipline going against a relatively untrained gunslinger...would the melee' fighter ever emerge victorious.
The only severe drawback of a firearm in CQB is the reliance on a finite ammunition source (magazines...or power packs in the case of blaster weaponry) which could become a liability if the operator gets into a hairy situation, however...guess what...then the gun suddenly becomes a club or bludgeoning weapon, and there ya go...you now have your precious melee' weapon
Martial arts...melee' combat and all of that stuff are wonderful in their own right, and blades do have a soft spot in my heart, however...it's Hollywood romanticism when you get down to brass tacks. I see martial arts training to be invaluable in some instances though...and those instances would be in supplementing the training regimen of a gunfighter so as to make them more lethal at close range. The gun's already got distance and power covered, so now with some fancy footwork and the implementation of some good biomechanics, you've got a complete package...and that's all without lugging around a blade.
Hmm..I said I wouldn't rant...too bad. I see enough melee' crap on these boards so...I don't really care. For my opinion on the situation, watch the movie "Versus". It's a comedy/ horror/ kung-fu/ action flick. It makes fun of other actions films, but I'll relate a short bit from it in which a martial artists goes against a guy with a Barrett M82A1 .50 Caliber sniper rifle.
"HAHAHA-I'm a Master of the Martial Arts. You'll never hit me with a bullet that slow."
"BOOM"
Guess who wins. "
Right, but it's okay for melee to be overpowered? Right?
No. I want it balanced. No one should be uber. And it's not balanced as it is currently.

It is still a game. A game everyone including Melee Players should be able to enjoy. And not one single profession, playstytle or whatever.
