Thread: Devs smarter than they appear....maybe
I see you've done your homework....one thing that stood out to me that didn't sound too impressive...
A full-template Jedi Padawan is supposedly balanced to be 1.5 times as powerful as a regular profession combat template.
/shrug
anyhow nice job on findin that so fast
I'm sure if COMPETENT DESIGNERS AND ENGINEERS ran SWG instead of marketers and managers who care only about deadlines, set in stone release dates, and in doing anything to save a buck (ie: continuing to "fix" things with the least possible effort or cost) by nerfing rather than enhancing, we'd not be in a position where the game gets more broken with EACH new patch, and one that didn't have a spaghetti code base in such poor condition that a hotfix to TURN OFF CITY MAITENANCE didn't kill ALL DoT's!
The sad thing is SWG isn't doing badly enough in the market to warrant the firing of the management team. But it will never do as well AS IT SHOULD HAVE beause of them.
Actually, the game, despite having 250K subs, and being the #1 sci-fi MMO on the market (of course, there aren't any other major ones other than MXO), it IS a failure. Here is why:
There is ZERO excuse for SWG not having over a million subscribers. I GUARANTEE you there are MANY times more people out there who are fans of Star Wars who would consider playing a MMO of it than WARCRAFT fans who would consider playing a MMO of it... For that reason alone, Lucas should have the backbone to replace those who have made the decisions that led us to this point with people who won't continue the same culture of break/fix/nerf/break/nerf/break/toss in expansion/break/nerf that is at SWG.
The bottom line, the blame lies with people like Smedley, McDaniel, Dickinson, not with CS, not with the Devs who can only code what they are TOLD to code (they don't make the decisions).

Really SW has millions and millions of fans. Of course not all like Video games, but come on 250,000 world wide?? It should at least have 1 million and be top 3 in MMO's.
SWG has 250K subs to WoW's 2 million. I personally don't like WoW, it's not my cup of tea. But when I talk to people who do play it, they often tell me that the great CUSTOMER SERVICE, the fact that new content is added FOR FREE, and that the devs make an effort to listen to them and produce what they want to play, are always cited. All that from a company that had never made a MMO before.
Imagine if SWG players could say that about SOE?

I would agree with you but my question is this...Like us, the devs clearly know that the jedi who have quit, will immediately return once frs or nerfs are fixed. Further, for most, the whole point of this game is to become a jedi. Maybe not SOE's intentions, but the customers of course. The movies make us want that. I am sure that the games most popular selling point is becoming a jedi. It is difficult to change midstream.
I think the real shame here is not as much the changes to the game over the past 2 years, but more so the complete lack of respect the Customer Service people give us. Change is difficult for those implimenting it as well as those receiving it. But to provide short, curt, or rude answers to questions asked by the thousands that play, only guarentees anger and hostility by the customers. And thats if they even give an answer (more often than not, silence is their weapon of choice). It breeds rumors, anger, frustration, and hostility which then we direct at ourselves because CS is not there to aim it at. Devs are not meant to be CS representatives. They are creators. It is our CS reps such as Tiggs, TH, etc, that should be standing up and answering the questions we have. Not the devs. Instead they say mostly nothing and if they do speak, your fortunate to get a very professional "mind your own business" response.
I say change the game to adapt to whatever way you feel is correct and will allow the game to continue on with profit. But with that change, you must be professional, polite, informative, and understanding to the frustrations of the thousands of customers you have. Otherwise, this will become like an ex-girlfriend. Something you have fond memories of but would rather spend your time in other laces because you will be treated the way you like, not the way you are forced to.
