If you read the stickied post here from the Chef forum and their extensive work on melee vs. ranged defense (defense is not VS but based on the weapon you are holding), you'll find that for now the ranged defense line of defender does nothing for you. I would go 4044 and soak up the extra LS block until the DEVs get around to fixing melee/ranged defense.

Edit:
Just read further down the post... if you can find a steady supply of vayerbok (which I have never seen), then 4440 Def for the inate armor makes more sense.

I'm probably going to go looking for the stuff this evening. I've seen it here and there, but not wide-spread.
