Thread: How do you think the devs would answer a Straitforward What are your long term goals for Jedi?
It would be either
1) "We have no specific plans for or against any action affecting any specific profession within any game that might contain something labeled 'jedi'."
or
2) We are happy to announce our new $30 expansion, SWG: Return of the Robes

We all know that anytime we've been given the opportunity to ask any dev or public relations person any definitive questions about the direction they are going about one game aspect or another (ESPECIALLY when it comes to Jedi) they have masterfully spun their answers in almost every instance to be speaking, but not really saying anything at all.
This has held true whetherit's an opportunity we've been given to pose 5 questions or what-not to whoever at SOE, or if it's one of the regular 'Dev Chats' that are held. So for the most part, we always come from this instance feeling that for all we got out of it, we might as well have not asked any questions at all.
Maybe we just need to better tailor our questions to avoid them being responded to with double talk or empty statements full of inconsequential fluff. Something along the lines of.
"It is already well known that there are many combat templates that are much better than, if not as good as any Jedi template, yet the work required to become a Jedi is substancially higher, along with the risk factor for a profession that provides little to no increased benifit. With this in mind, what is your long term goals for the Jedi profession, are they to remain where they are in the middle of power curve as far as combat templates are concerned, or do you plan to make their effectiveness worth the effort in the future?"
I have a feeling though, that many such questions have been proposed before, and probably from someone who may have worded it a lot better than I have, andin a much more intelligent manner. I also feel that such questions that leave no room for anything more than an honest answer are probably overlooked and disregarded.

If asked during a live chat, would yield an answer like: "The risk for reward dynamic is very important, and it is something we are constantly monitoring and making tweaks to where needed for all professions. It's important that all players feel adequately rewarded for their efforts!"
But OT, I wanted to respond to something KelnMacil mentions above, and my apologies in advance for the thread hijack...

there's people running around with SWORDS in an era where people have GUNS. Does anyone else think this is completely stupid? I'm a powers Jedi btw...I should be offended if a person with a common sword came at me. What do you think the Emperor would do (after he stopped laughing)? Heck, even a Jedi with a Lightsaber would laugh. The only two places I recall using melee weapons in earnest was Jabba's Palace and the Ewok village, and let's face it...both were pretty backwards places in the galaxy.
I think the part I've highlighted is a critical insight. It's not that there weren't melee combatants in the Star Wars universe, so much as that the type of melee combatants we see in SWG ought to be the exception rather than the rule, andlimited to a fewbackwater locales in the galaxy by any reasonable expectation. Of course there a tons of otherreasonable expectations that SWG violates, but thats a topic fora different thread. If they want melee combants in Galaxies, fine, but then update the weapons and skills to some high tech counterparts. The melee weapons all ought to have running lights, make noise and flash brilliantly, not be easily recognizablerip-offs from any sword and scorcery fantasy artwork you've ever seen. the few in SWG that do are notextravagant enough. I am reminded of Greivious's body guards in Ep III.-- Now THAT's the way to implement melee combat in Star Wars.

There is a reason SOE and the DEV's aren't saying anything and thats because NO news is better than BAD news.

I would even say they'd deny that Jedi and Space are the two main things that make "Star Wars" what it is....and I think they really don't understand that. I cannot believe how much emphasis is put on "the ground game" and on mundane professions. No offense to those inmundane professions, but you guys can get what you are looking for in a dozen other games. Where's the big space battles? Where's the sudden battles between Imperials and Rebels breaking out? Why aren't there ISDs patrolling around in space, or Alliance and Imperial ships duking it out above Corellia? Why can't guilds own a Corvette or other ship? Where's the AT-AT's or other surface vehicles? How come my AT-ST is a pet? Why can't I ride in one? Why are they so down on Jedi? Why do bounty hunters even hunt Jedi? Why arent Smugglers smuggling? Where's the Imperial ships stopping me and boarding me?
You see...the REAL question isn't where are they going with Jedi. The REAL question is "Where are they going with this game?" I started playing with two hopes. First, that I would be immersed in the world of Star Wars...like what I saw in the movies. Second, that I could some day become a Jedi and all that it entails during this time period. What I expected was not EQ with a cheap star wars painting in the background. I mean...there's people running around with SWORDS in an era where people have GUNS. Does anyone else think this is completely stupid? I'm a powers Jedi btw...I should be offended if a person with a common sword came at me. I don't even know why we discuss reasoning on these forums. SOE has clearly demonstrated that they do not give a flying dutchman about their customers. They FORGET we are CUSTOMERS. We are treated as if they are doing us a favor by running this game...as if it were a free service. We should all just live with the cards we are dealt and suck it up. If you drove a new car off the lot and it broke down halfway home, then you called the dealer and they said "suck it up" and insurance comapny said "we can't help you" and the manufacturor said "working as intended"...would you just roll over and do as your told? Nope! Unfortunately for all of us, the law does not extend into the gray areas of the online gaming industry and it's relationship with it's customers. Some day it will, and what the company says on it's box will have to be so or class action lawsuits will be in order. Until that day we are stuck with crappy games and the whims of game designers who don't know star wars from lord of the rings.
Quit you say? I can't. I simply cannot do so. I don't love my character, but I put too much time into him, and that time means something to me even if the character itself is a joke. I also have close friends who I can see everyday because of this "game". Someday I will quit, I know I will. When my friends move on and I have held onto my hopes long enough. Because I know this company will never meet the expectations of the majority of it's customers. It's funny, I thought some of the games I had played in the past were bad, especially WWIIOL....but SOE has taken this game of dev vs customers to a whole new level, and it is uglier than I have ever seen it. The rats at CRS would be in awe.

"There are currently too many Jedi still" (Which is bull)
You will NOT get an answer no matter how you phrase the question.
I posted a similar thread months ago....not a peep from them. We have asked every possible way via every possible channel.
Not a freaking word from the devs on what this profession is supposed to be.
most amazing disregard for customers in the history of the Internet.
