Thread: Powers question, go easy on this new jedi....
600k xp isnt that hard to get, so it really doesnt matter if you start with LS xx2x or Powers 2xxx.

Only reason I could imagine would be Force cost - you can choose to grind in a grinding group with a training saber to save Force, but you pay the full Force cost for lightning with no means to adjust it.

With area lightning, he can just stand back and hit everything one time for his xp (assuming it's a spin group). The force cost is really pretty negligible--it's only the tanks that are expending much force staying alive and killing.
Besides, the sooner he learns force management, the better.
Jakber, get area lightning, then cloak asap (granted cloak will be much less useful for you come the ranger redux, but who knows when that will be).
If you intend to grind in a spin group, here's how you do it. Grind up your Lightning tree til you get Area Lightning 2000, then grind up your Psychokinesis line to at LEAST 2001 so you have force throw, giving you two powers attacks (which are on different timers).
I continued grinding the lightning and psychokineses trees to 4004 before I ground any other powers trees. If you want sabers, I would suggest 0400 (two handed) for Imp. Saber Power Attack, the single highest power saber attack (just incase you need a melee attack). After you grind up powers 4004, it's really up to you whether or not to proceed in the diminish tree or the subjugation tree. Personally, I did diminish first for the Intimidate and Weaken (later area intim and weaken)skills. I did Subjugation last, as mind blast and cloak don't really lend themselves too well to a group dynamic. When you get Imp. Area Lightning, Area Intim, Area KD and Area Stun (imp force throw) [powers 4044], you will have outstanding crowd control skills and will soon gain a reputation in the spins groups, making you the most desirable groupie short of a Defender. I can tell you that spins groups like nothing more than spinning a lair while the agro is KD/Intim/Stun. You get your timing down and all you see is a sea of purple as everything dies at once from your area lightning.
Hope this helps.

0020 LS is essential if you want to be a meaningful part of a spin group (i.e. get the maximum XP and contribute to the dmg). Area Lightning is a cone effect, not AoE and is slow and uses more Force than Sabre Spin.
Even if you don't intend on having ANY LS skills at all you should get 0020 LS first just so you can do the grind.
I am going to have to respectfully disagree on that one. Most spin groups the creatures all come in around the lair anyways so provided the player is far enough back 25m or so their Area Lightning should be fine. And all they need to do is hit each creature once before they die and they are fine. I definitely don't think that a new Jedi should waste their first 600K on Saber boxes if they are going to end up going Powers anyways.
Most of the spin groups I have been in only have 3-4 major damage dealers anyways and the rest are just players trying to level up who are trying to make sure they hit every creature..... And as a previous poster said, once he/she has Area Lightning it will be very quick to move up to some of the other moves that will quickly make then an integral part of the group. I don't think any time should be wasted in Sabers until it's absolutely necessary.

Incorrect. He is trying to learn powers, not Sabers. He will learn NOTHING about powers, using LS spin attack. I ground perfect well with the outline in my earlier post. Moreover, DBL LS skill tree (spin attack) was the LAST tree I grinded. Area lightning is a perfectly viable attack coupled with Force Throw, even if it is conal in effect. Stand 10m off the spawn and time it to where the most gurks are within the range. If he's going Powers, he NEEDS to learn two things to be successful. 1) Timing, 2) Force management. He might as well start from the beginning, learning to master each.

Yes I am planning on doing the whole Powers skill. With the Area Lightning being a cone, can I hazard to say it is no different than an area attack I have been using in spin groups already, that area attackbeing Fan shot from Pistoleer. Since I am familiar with Fan shot I should have no problem with the lightning area. Honestly, I am not very interested in LS except maybe for LS 0004 sometime so that I may be able to craft a decent saber at some point. Am I way off bases with my thinking??
If you're interested in powers, go powers--don't waste time with sabers. And as you're well aware, powers users don't tend to have much trouble with BHs (and don't have to spend umpteen millions of credits on speed tapes and pearls/crystals). How powers will be over time versus other Jedi, no one knows or will know until the FRS comes back.
I wouldn't worry about every having a light saber if you're not going to do it in a meaningful way, though (at least 0404). Do make sure you keep a good level 54 ranged weapon (laser rifles are nice for the range) as backup and keep it hotkeyed so you can un/equip it quickly.
