In space, it is a data disc. Maybe I should put this in the JTL forum, sorry.

It's used for nothing. Just a hunk of junk there to take up space in your inventory. You can read it, there's usually a message on it. But it serves no real purpose.

Players collect those messages.
I've saved one of everthing I findand when I put one of those messages up for sale on the bazaars they often sell off in less then an hour.
