The answer is simple, if you're asking about stuff like broken data pads, view finders and such. SOE wants to give an authentic llok and feel as far as trivial items and over all looks go. The original trilogy, everything looked banged up, and most stuff looked like it was junk. So SOE put that stuff in primarily for looks (decor).

Broken Datapads are placed in Datapad Housings, along with a Datapad Batterie, Datapad Connectors, and a Datapad Backlight. Together, these items make an Empty Datapad. If you complete the Datadisk Repair Kit and place the resulting Datadisk inside the Empty Datapad, then the two items become a piece of fiction. I've seen Meatlump Research, some kind of weird Cookbook, and a lot of others. I don't think anyone's found them all, but I will some day ![]()
Broken Viewscreens are placed together with the Picture Printer and it's required pieces to make either the Droids in Contrast, Double Helix, or Bio Engineer posters.
However, your statement does hold true so far for almost anything with "broken" in its name.
