try mastering pilot (say rebel pilot) and then going imp. you wont be able to wear the rebel ace helmet because this game sucks. true story.

The Katarn armor isn't factional.
The "Rebel ACE" Helmet is.

ok lets say you're a rebel . . . you do the clone armor quest . . . get the armor . . . bio-link it . . .

and then decide to drop rebel status. I'm guessing you can't wear the armor anymore . . . but could you do the quest over as a neutral?

I don't think Clone armor is considered faction armor. The quest to get it obviously is, but I believe the armor itself can be worn by anyone regardless of faction.

Definitely not considered as faction, as I ve traded my imp set vs a rebel set, and both of us can wear it. And I think once you've done the quest you can't do it once again, even when switching faction.

Yeah, because I'm looking at the Katarn armor I got in the Rebel quest right now and it's labeled... oh crap, no it's not. It just says "Katarn Armor".
