There are a wealth of quests that have items that you are asked to deliver to another NPC in another city or on another planet. To my knowledge, ANY of these items can be kept simply by transfering them into and equiped back pack and speaking to the NPC that started you on the quest. If you talk to them a second time, you will be asked if you have for gotten lost in your task (or something similar to this) or if you are unable to do the task at this time. That second responce will abort the quest and allow you to talk to the NPC again and start the mission over giving you a second chance to get the item in question.
Now, this will be in no way a complete list of what can be done with this but off the top of my head, here's a quick list of NPC's that will work like this and items you can get. (I make no claim as to the buged or unbuged state of any of these quest.)
Any "common" NPC. These include Smugglers, Criminals, Scientists, etc. There is a ton of stuff you can get from these guys. Holocron splinters, Camera, Loudspeaker just to name a few.
On Dathomir, there's a quest that will get you a Broken Lightsaber. (non functional, once thought to be part of unlocking a Jedi character)
On Dathomire, there is another quest (part of the Nightsister missions) that has you killing some Stormtrooper. You must be a Rebel but the loot is the Sergeant Chestplate (non equipable)
On Rori, there is a mission that has you retrieve a painting from the artist. This is "stealable" and makes some nice decoration.
Folks, there are many, many more of these ingame. I do not have names and waypoints for all of these from memory. I'll be working on getting a list of these though over the comming months. Please, if you find or have information on these, go ahead and start a thread about it! There was a long period of time where these where the main quests in the game. Sadly, a lot of new players simply power grind and run off to Kashyyyk to loot there and get rich.
Just want to correct you on this one AND answer the original poster about this item. In order to obtain this STchestplate with orange should pad you have to do some mission for the Singing Mountain Clan. The trick is finding the place - its not a POI. You have to travel to the trade outpost on Dathomir (the north starport) and head Northwest as if going to the Nightspider cave POI. On top of a mountain/hill you will find a large circular structure that has Signing Mountain Clan inside.
Start doing the quests to get farther inside and i believe the second SMC gives the quest to kill the Stormtrooper. After doing so a chestplate will be put into inventory. I put the chestplate in backpack, delete waypoint, then head back to NPC and say you can't finish quest and then retake it - rinse and repeat. I would provide the wp to the SMC location, but not logged in right now - will try to remember tomorrow. Oh yeah - you have to be Rebel and combatant at the time to do the quest. Hope this helps.
P.S. Its pretty kool inside too - they have slaves locked up with skulls and such in the cells lol
