Thread: Cybernetics & Clothing-- A Bigger Issue Then Expected? A Change is Needed.
I’ll go over these.
These limbs equip on your character’s arm “slot”. Either right or left, or both.
Issues:
- As for clothing, you cannot wear a robe, jacket, (some) long-sleeve shirt, skin suit, body suit or flight suit because they have sleeves on both sides. These sleeves want to equip in the same “slot” that the cybernetic arm is in… and it can’t be done. Gloves, like long-sleeve gloves, workman’s gloves, and the like, cannot be worn either because they equip on both hands, and one hand is, of course, cybernetic so that can’t be done either.
This limits a player to shirts that have no sleeves, like the muscle shirt or bikini. If you have a cybernetic arm, that’s all you can wear (besides an armor chestplate). So if you have a large wardrobe of fancy clothing that you like to wear, guess what? You have to throw them all out and buy some new clothes that aren’t very stylish at all.
- And lets not forget our hairy friends, the Wookiees. They have a very limited range of clothing as it is, and most of the clothing has some kind of sleeves on it. If a Wookiee has a cybernetic limb, then he has to walk around “naked”.
- An example for me is that my wardrobe consists of three clothing sets—one includes a robe (my everyday outfit), one includes a flight suit (Rebel pilot) and the last includes a jacket (Smuggler). Not only do I use them to look good, but I also use them for role playing. These are my styles. Yet I can’t wear any of them. I’ve never once worn a muscle shirt, and I don’t plan on starting now… they’re just plain ugly and they don’t fit the style I want for my character.
There’s a huge selection of clothing in Star Wars Galaxies, and these clothing exist to be worn. Lets us wear them!
- But style isn’t all that’s an issue here. What about crafters that have clothing with stats on them to help them craft, doctors that have stats on their clothing to help them heal people, dancers that have stats on their clothing to help heal fatigue, ect. If these stats are on clothing that isn’t a muscle shirt, then they can’t be worn. Crafters with a cybernetic arm attached wont be able to craft as good of items. Doctors wont be able to heal as well. Dancers and musicians wont be able to heal as well, either. Just to name a few. This, in turn, can make them lose credits.
- That, however, still isn’t everything. Some armor, like Ubese andMabari, have chest plates that have bracers and biceps as one piece, like an armored jacket basically. If you a cybernetic arm equipped, then you can’t equip these either. I can understand making players not able to wear armor on over their cybernetic, but not letting players wear armor at all is ridiculous. And some professions can’t wear anything but these, so they have no choice. This is the same for Jedi… they have their own special armor, and as far as I know it’s all one piece. If a Jedi has a cybernetic limb equipped, then he/she can’t wear their Jedi armor.
- Many armor gloves can’t be worn either, because they equip on both hands. Some armor gloves, however, do equip on one hand, but very few do (only two, I believe).
This isn’t fair for anyone, nor is it practical. Many wouldn’t even think about going out into combat without some armor on.
As you can see with this alone, cybernetic arms do more harm then they do good.
Cybernetic Legs:
These limbs remove your character’s waist and legs and replace it with a pair of cybernetic legs.
Issues:
- It’s given we can’t wear armor leggings or boots with this, or regular clothing boots, and that’s fine. But we can’t wear body suits, skin suits, flight suits, or anything like that, either. Again, this limits a player’s clothing (though not as badly as arms do).
- The same issue exists for crafters, dancers, doctors, ect., that have clothing with stats, that the cybernetic arms create.
Now I can see why players shouldn’t be able to wear armor over their cybernetic limb. For example, if you have a cybernetic right arm, then you shouldn’t be able to wear a right bracer or bicep. This makes you choose if you want the special ability and enhancement granted with the limb, or if you want the protection of that armor. But limiting so greatly and choosing what a player can wear for clothing and forcing players to wear a certain type of armor just isn’t fair, nor does it make any sense or serve any valuable purpose other then just being a royal pain.
Why limit and disrupt a player so greatly just because they have a single cybernetic limb equipped? Like I said, making us choose if we want armor on that section or a cybernetic limb is fine. But making a player think "well, if I equip my cybernetic arm, I can't wear this, or this, or this, or this..." is just stupid.
I don’t think the Devs have seen all this coming. This is a bigger issue then I’m sure they planned for.
- Let Tailors create “scissors”. These single-use items can be created by Tailors, sold to other players, and allow the players to “cut” a sleeve or legs off clothing. The player would simply select the “use” option on the “scissors”, a small window would come up listing the player’s clothing and one-piece armor (like Jedi robes, Ubese and Tantel jackets, ect.) that they had in their inventory, then they’d click on the clothing/armor and hit “OK”. Another window would come up asking if they wanted to cut off the left arm, right arm, or legs. The player would select one and click on “cut”. This would remove the chosen piece from the clothing/armor, permanently. This could be done twice, and only twice, to a piece of clothing or armor. The cut would be permanent and could not be un-done. So if a player wants that arm or the legs replaced, they’d have to buy a new piece of clothing (or armor), which would in turn give Tailors (and Armorsmiths) extra business.
In the case of gloves, the scissors would simply remove one glove (right or left).
- Or let Tailors have the ability to “tailor” clothing themselves. A player would bring the Tailor their clothing and trade it to the Tailor. The Tailor would then use a pair of “scissors”, created by the Tailor (or perhaps a Master Artisan for this case), and would be able to cut the desired piece off the clothing. This could be done twice to a single piece of clothing. The cut could not be un-done, either. Armorsmiths would have their own version of “heavy scissors” to cut sleeves off armor. This would work the same was as for Tailors.
In the case of gloves, the same way would work but one glove (left or right) would be removed.
- Or make a copy of all the clothing items that a Tailor can make, and all the one-piece chestplates an Armorsmith can make. Three copies of each—one without the legs, one without the right arm, and one without the left arm. And for gloves, a copy of each clothing and armor glove—one that had both gloves, one that had the left glove and one that had the right glove. So a Tailor or Armorsmith would be able to craft these items already without the certain part. (This, though, would probably be a pain in the butt for Devs to do.)
- Or let this be in the crafting process. At some point in crafting, the Tailor or Armorsmith could select which part of the clothing/armor they wanted to remove. Then they’d finish crafting and the finished product would be missing the chosen part.
- Or, for my final idea, when a cybernetic limb is equipped and a player tries to equip a piece of clothing or one-piece that has sleeves on it, the sleeve of the side with a cybernetic limb would simply disappear. When the clothing/armor item is un-equipped, the sleeve would re-appear. If the clothing has legs on it (like a flightsuit), then the legs would disappear if the character had cybernetic legs equipped; then re-appear once the item was un-equipped. If the player had a cybernetic arm and legs equipped and tried to equip something like a flightsuit, then the corresponding pieces would disappear (legs and sleeve). In the case of gloves, one glove would disappear (the one that had a cybernetic equipped in it’s place).
For example, if I had a cybernetic right arm on and tried to equip a robe, the right arm on the robe would disappear and the cybernetic right arm would show instead. This would no doubt be less hassle for players then the other ideas, and perhaps easier to code in.
1) Ask yourself if you are up to do the quest(s) needed to obtain the cybernetics.
If the answer is no: Turn around and go back to doing whatever you were doing
If the answer is yes: Do the quest, get the arm/legs. Congrats! Move on to #2
2) Think of your favorite article of clothing your toon wears. Got it? Ok now think. Can it be worn with the cybernetics on?
If the answer is yes: Congrats you got lucky! Get that sucker installed and have fun!
In the answer is no: move on to part 3.
3) Ask yourself: What is more important to me, my black jacket, or a cybernetic that adds stats to my combat ability.
If the cybernetics is more important: Install it! Find a new peice of clothing to wear int he meantime and have a ball!
If the clothing is more important: Don't install it. Store the cybernetic for a later time when you might want it.
If you want both things but can have then because thats life and in life you can't get everything you want: Go to the SWG forums and make a post like this on multiple forums calling your fashion disaster a "bigger issue" when it really isn't.

You must've missed a lot of what was said, for clothing isn't all we can't equip. Like one-piece armor.
And besides, why should I have to pick something as stupid as a decision between a cybernetic or a useless piece of clothing? Clothing only exists to be for looks. It exists to be worn. So we should be able to wear them.

To add a con to cybernetics. If there was nothing but pros to cybernetics everyone would wear them. You add a few cons. You have to decide between some good stats or the ability to wear the clothes. I don't see the issue here. Anyone with common sense can look at these cybernetics and see that most articals of clothing wouldn't fit over them anyway.
All pros have cons. The pros of the stat bonuses and the cons of the clothing incompatability. I don't know. I have had a cybernetic arm since the CU went live and it was a death consequence and everything seems fine. Can wear any type of armor I need, can I wear my jacket? Nope but its worth it. Cant wear Ubese chest? Then wear tantel. Adapt.
Sounds to me like you want the best of both worlds.
While we are on big issues. If I fly a TIE fighter I cant fly such ships like X-Wings and A-Wings. This needs to be fixed.
But, when you have the limbs or legs removed by the npc doctor, are they destroyed?
If you could just switch out parts every once in a while, it wouldn't be as bad.

QFE
There are enough cons to them as it is.

Another con to the legswas stated quite well by my good friend Hebi...
"who would want to wear cybernetic leg anyways? It aint JUST the legs they take off..."
