I did the following tests, with myself targeted using control-1.
1) typed /im, then /imagedesignSetValue eye_color 01. That worked. Accepted change.
2) With the imagedesign interface still up following a successful /imagedesignSetValue eye_color 01 (which I accepted), I used the already-up interface to try to change eye color. Unsuccessful. The box comes up for you to accept, but after accepting no change is made.
3) With the imagedesign interface still up following a successful /imagedesignSetValue eye_color 03 (which I accepted), I typed /imagedesignSetValue eye_color 10. Unsuccessful. The box comes up for you to accept, but after accepting no change is made.
4) With the imagedesign interface still up following a successful /imagedesignSetValue eye_color 01 (which I accepted), typed /im and then used the interface to change eye color. Successful.
5) With the imagedesign interface still up following a successful /imagedesignSetValue eye_color 01 (which I accepted), typed /im then /imagedesignSetValue lips_color 01. Successful. Even though the ID box was still up, I repeated the process, first typing /im and then /imagedesignSetValue lips_color 05. Also Successful.
Conclusion: even though the interface box is up from the last image design session, you must still type /im prior to every change - whether by the interface or by /imagedesignSetValue commands - in order for the change to occur. Otherwise you get an accept box that doesn't do anything.

Ahhh that might very well be what people are doing, nice work
We can write a whole FAQ just for "Why isn't my macro working". I was starting to think maybe they had disabled the commands for non masters.

Confirmed that commands work for non-masters. I used my novice entertainer alt to change n'Jessi's lip color using the commands, and it worked just fine, using the system I described above.
