Thread: State of the Profession: Image Design (Revised)
As promised, here is a revied version of the state of the profession thread.
Over four months since the release of Star Wars Galaxies, the Image Designer profession is the third least-popular profession on the server. It is gaining very quickly with the discovery of holocrons, and the demand to become a jedi.
Other players are dependant on the Image Design profession for the ability to completely change their character after character creation. This is the first time that this has been possible in any MMORPG to this extent. Other games such as Ultima Online will let you customize your character when you create it. But many changes that you make then, can not be done after you are in the game. And the sheer number of changes available with the Image Design skill, has never been available in any other online game.
However, the professionisn't as high-demand as other professions.Unlike many crafter professions, things slow down as people create their idea of the "perfect character" and become happy with it.Yet, there are many changes that could be made to the profession itself, in the form of both bug fixes, and the desire for new abilities, which could easily enhance the popularity of this profession.
The following is a breakdown of where the skill stands now, and some possible changes that could enhance it. This list was edited from it's previous version to include the new desires, as well as removing a few bugs that were fixed (if there are any that were removed that I forgot to take off of the list, please let me know).
Note: These lists are constantly updated. Please feel free to respond with new submissions, or point out changes that have been fixed.
Bugs - The following is a list of bugs dealing with the Image Design profession. These bugs are listed in order of priority, based on the feedback fromthe Image Design community.
- Cross-species hairstyles
- When changing hairstyle or color, it shows up as the default color to everyone else (including the designer), until the customer times completely out of the server.
- Missing abilities - Currently just the bald hair style
- Some sliders will automatically set to zero when the option to change that feature is selected - even if the player has a higher value (for example, we open the slider to alter cheeks, and suddenly the person has none, and the slider shows 0).
- Eye shape can not be altered. The current "eye shape" option on the menu is tied into eye angle, instead.
- Players are still getting stuck with "... already has an outstanding image design offer" if they crash while being worked on.
- Headwraps cancel out many styles on some species, such as lekku positions on twi'leks. When this happens, twi'leks will often appear to have more than two lekku.
- "Halo" or "glowing face" effect on male twi'leks (where the face turns out a shade or two lighter than the rest of their body).
- Changing hair styles (all species) does not require any mind cost at all.
Wish List - The following is a current list of all changes desired by the Image Design community. Please note: I actually gave up the idea of "ranking" these. I decided it would be unfair to the new submissions that were posted to this thread both before and after the idea to "rank" the bug-list came up.Furthermore, most wish-list items seem to be equally desired by most image designers. Any addition to the skill is a good addition! So for the time being, I've simply combined the lists and submissions given here. I also eliminated the specifics in this list, until we get confirmation on whether or not it's possible, and acceptable by Lucas Arts.
- A "pay for services as rendered" option. A secure way to offer the style, but not actually completethedesignuntil payment is given.
- Body Tattoos.
- More hair colors (including un-natural hair colors).
- More hair styles (including more from Episodes 1 and 2, as well as "spikey" hair).
- Hip/Rump adjustments.
- Shoulder-width adjustments (males)
- Eye spacing adjustments.
- Head size and head heightadjustment (excluding Mon Cals, which already have head size).
- Facial-weight adjustment (the ability to give double chins and/or sagging cheeks).
- Scars, bruises, and other "battle signs".
- Forehead angle/Brow protrusion.
- More facial hair styles.
- "Pet dye" - The ability to change the color of pets, within reason. This could also be given to the bio-engineers.
- Image Design vendors (the ability to sell a wig or lipstick, for example).
- More skin-colors and/or "body paint".
- Metallic shades for everything.
- The ability to do some special "costume make-up" (such as making someone look like azombie with sunken-in eyes, and ghost-white skin).
- The ability to change eye depth.
- "All hair" styles for zabrak.
- Ability to alter horns and hair independantly for zabraks.
- A "customer-side menu" allowing the customer to see all available selections for the feature they want changed.
- A means to actually propose a multitude of changes to a client at one time as well allow said changes to be 'queued up' for application to the client. This is mostly to make full body and/or full face work alot easier for the Image Designer and to reduce clicking in general.
- A means to 'remember' your last proposed change to a specific client so it's easier to adjust traits ala "A little smaller" (note, pure convienance now thanks to slider numbers).
- "Pregnant" characters
- More of everything we have available now -hairstyles, markings, patterns, lip colors, hair colors, tattoos, twi'lek eyebrows, etc.
- The ability to register houses, cantinas, or "hair salons" on global maps.
- Special town structures for Image Designers.
- Eye liner
- "Shaved" option for wookies and bothans (not that I know many people who would want to look at the end result...)
- "Wookie dreads"
- Numbered hairstyles for better reference-ability.
- "Default View" ofthe character we are working on,which facilitates the image designer's work, despite height differences, and lighting conditions.
- Ability to go beyond character creation limits on body changes (muscle, height, torso, weight, etc.)
- Trandoshan Ridge Colors - similar to the frill colors of a bothan, but for trandoshan ridges.
- The ability to make temporary changes, such as temporary eye color changes, or something else that wears off with time.
- New pupil shapes for eyes.
- No-eyebrow option for female twi'leks.
- Ability to change male chest hair and color.
- "Partial grey" coloring for aging characters.
Skill Gain - I will be opening a voting thread on the skill gain issue soon.
Please feel free to add comments, suggestions, corrections, or other constructive criticism to this thread.
Very nice!
I need confirmation on something - are male freckles still bugged for male zabraks and twi'leks? I tried to set freckles on a male zab shortly after the patch, and did not have the freckle option. I have not had opportunity to ID one since.
A few more suggestions
- (bug) male twi'leks when wearing noble's crest or ys'rak have top of head go white (maybe an art issue)
- (wish) additional eyebrow colors for female twi'leks in the same pallette as the skin/lekku markings
- (wish) eyebrows on twi'lek males
- (wish) blush for females
- (wish) hair that hangs out of hats, instead of being stuffed into the hats
- (wish) nail polish (fingers and toes)
I know these are a little out there - but so are shaved wookiees.
Yeah, you're right. It really can't be worse than a shaved wookie....
Don't forget about the wish to be able to image design merchant vendors. Some of those vendors are painfully ugly. LOL Otherwise everything looks fantastic. I would LOVE to be able to do more dramatic makeup.
- "wookiee braids" - more feminine pigtails, or something for female wookiees
- "chest" customization on wookiee females - they're mammals, right?
Suggested additions to Bugs:
Suggested additions to Wish-List - New Content:
- Image Design vendors - Wigs have always been very controversial. Lipstick and eyeshadow have been less so, but still not universally desired.
- Dramatic eyeshadow
- Bindis
- Blush
- Image Design vendor bark (Advertising II - Merchant)
- Ability to Image Design merchant vendors - PLEASE add this, it is VERY desired by Merchants, not even Master Merchants have any choice in what their vendor looks like beyond choosing species and gender.
- Extended palettes for makeup - esp. more shades of pink, peach, red
- Wookiee hair braiding - VERY frequent request, there are art team concept sketches of this
- Female wookiees have requested pigtails
- Hair highlights
- More variety of hair lengths for existing styles
- Piercing comes up often
- Male bothans have little hair accessories that are permanently set to yellow, they would like the color to be changeable.
- More styles with hair accessories
- The ability to dye hairstyle accessories: barettes, ponytail holders, headbands, etc.
- Lekku thickness slider
- Body freckles (arms, shoulders, chest)
- Beauty marks (various patterns of moles on the face or maybe just the option of one bold mole on cheekbone or above lip)
- Black facial hair does not show on dark skinned avatars
- 3-D texture for facial hair comes up a lot
Suggested additions to Wish-List - User Interface:
- Numbers in the corner of each hairstyle
- Improved view of customer's face
- Special light source for ID's
- Character-creation-like view
- Ability to get customer's head to hold still during an ID session, with their consent of course
My suggested subtractions:
- The ability to do some special "costume make-up" (such as making someone look like a zombie with sunken-in eyes, and ghost-white skin) - I'm not fond of this one, sounds like a Halloween request?
- STRONGLY OBJECT TO THIS ONE - A "customer-side menu" allowing the customer to see all available selections for the feature they want changed - I don't want the customer to be able to see everything I can do, cuts out roleplay potential and reduces us to npc vendors in my opinion.
Notes:
- On the fur shaving for bothans, wookiees - they want patterned fur shaving, akin to body tattoos.
- A torso option for Wookiees was no-no'd by LucasFilm.
- Torso beyond char creation limits has already been no-no'd by LucasFilm.
- Merchant related additions are hot right now given that SOE has stated they are focusing heavily on the profession.
Thank you for reading Rilawyn.

I agree with Kwee on both these points.
- Costume makeup seems silly. Warpaint, however, like Braveheart, may be really cool.
- A customer menu would be detrimental to the profession. The reason some customers come to image designers is becuase they botched character creation, "look weird" and can't figure out what is wrong. If the customers can do all the work, any schmuck with a master title could do the job because the customer is doing the job for him/her. In effect we are validating the grind-masters who have no concept of the profession.

I'm a new ID, and I like all of the Wish list items!
As for the bug above... not sure if this is the same or not: I can change the horn stlye and color, add hair (change style and color too), but no one but the client can see it. As the client, I can walk around and see my new changes, but no one else can.
Just making sure. Thanks
I know my husband in-game, Kthulu, really really wants:
*Twi'lek forehead bulges as an option for male Twi'leks
kind of like Bib Fortuna's ![]()
I don't see any problem with having it as an option for those Twi'leks who want it. I also don't understand why male Twi'leks have ears, while female Twi'leks have little "bumps" or "nodules"?
In each of the professions I am in, I have a pet desire that I would really, really love to see implemented. In dance, it's the addition of fans to use while dancing. In image design, it is the ability to add a beauty mark. I LOVE this idea! Maybe give us options as to where we could put it. Some of the most common places are under the eye, above the mouth (both sides for each) and even somewhere in the cleavage area. LOL
Something I would like to add to the wish list:
An option to change arm thickness: the arms look a little odd on someone who chooses a weight thats not twig like. =)

I think this is a general problem with the weight slider, that it only adds fat to the belly/butt region, when we should also get some action in the arm/leg/chin areas. That would be more realistic than the "pregnant penguin" look that we get now.
