Thread: Image Design and Eyes

So after immersing myself in the joy of ears (and creating several regrettable but cute Dumbo-esque characters), I have recognized a new obsession: Eyes.

There have been a couple people I've seen whose eyes just completely stand out and make a statement. The first set that completely blew me away was Daishiki on Wanderhome. The most recent set belonged to Magedellena on Bria. Possibly the same Mags who got her design messed with? If so, I understand why she was upset - she is beautiful? Gothic? Fierce? Not sure of the correct term. Either way I would have cried if I found out someone had messed with my design if it looked like that. Really great eyes.

If anyone has tips on eyes they want to share I would be very grateful. But I understand if some designs are "secret recipes" and not to be shared. Maybe some general pointers, like how important do you find eyeshadow to the design? Size? Eyebrows? Anything to avoid? Gender specific things to avoid?

Wookiee, Bothan, and Trando eyes are pretty straightforward I think. Size and tilt are about it. I have a little more trouble with trandos than with the other two. I'll be the first to admit I have tons of trouble all around with Rodians. Point up? Point down? Big? Small? Why do they get all wrinkly around the eyes when you make them small? Bah. Mon Cal eyes I love. I have one Cal with giant lucent orbs and one with small, downturned, fiercly yellow eyes. Its easy to see the overall personality of the Mon Cal change as you change its eye size/tilt.

Humans and Zabraks are much much more difficult. I have been experimenting with eyes and have only managed to come up with a whole lot of ugly. (More for my Image Design Gone Wrong collection) I really really wish that you had the option to zoom-in in the examine window lol. My screen resolution just isnt good enough to allow me to blow up the size in Photoshop. I've tried.

So any tips/stories are greatly welcome!

I fiddle with my eyes more than anyone else's, but mine are always a little larger than normal, quite tilted, and currently they're that lovely blue-green that looks really really bright? Like sort of teal, but almost glowing? I put them against dark facial fur and have had them commented on frequently.

When going for the asiatic rout you need to adjust the eye size to a bit larger than normal. If not you look very squinty and there is some odd clipping of your eye lids and and eye balls. I think this is due to the fact that eyeballs are different objects than the rest of you. You can see this by scrolling in to your head slowly. At one point you can see the backs of your eyeballs!!!

I like making Mon Cal eyes as large as possible, giving that real fisheye look. Angle makea huge difference in personality on them.

As for Rodians try metalic colors, particularly gold. The look really cool.

Hmmm Eyes I am rather good with picking colors. Or so I been told countless times..

Humans I love to do there eyes.. Only problem with colors on humans is there lack of red..

Alot of imp players want gothic type looks.. Whole Evil Vampire Jedi thing lol

Anyways for Evil, Yellow is next best color on humans.. Besides a red <sigh>

I do the basic yellow depending on the over all look of the player.. Sometimes I go a Yellow-Green shade or even yellow-orange.. All those work well for the "I am evil human" look...

My all time fav human eye color is a Purpleish-Blue mix. Near bottom right conner of MID eye color chart.. Its VERY stunning...

Sorry this isn't a how-to guild for all races/ and looks.. So some simple input on my part.. I am just very good with color matching eyes to a look.. Everyone leaves happy when I am done with them. And that's the most important thing to me about IDing..

Does screen resolution change your screen captures? Somehow I assumed it was all just taken at the generic 72 dpi ...

Maybe resolution was the wrong term lol... hmmm... when the game settings are set so that I can actually move and am not completely lagged the quality is too bad to focus in well.

Jeez... gimme a break! I've only used computers for like 10 years!

I tend to make female eyes as large as possible. Male eyes, on the other hand (at least as far as humans, zabraks etc go)generally look odd at max size. Mon Calimaris look good with large eyes regardless of sex. I will have to experiment on males of other races.

As for eye color, I tend to chose colors that compliment the total package.

Eye angle and shape also depend on various factors. If you look at my pic of Sepia and Omma on Corbantis, you will see that their eyes have different angles, which gives each of them a different look.

Eyes...the windows to the soul...hehehe

Anyways...when it comes to eyes, I am a sucker for blues and reds. Baby blue is my favorite color, and I think most characters look good with blue eyes. I think that the hair and eyes should counter the skin tone. (i.e.: dark skin should have light hair and eyes, light skin should have dark hair and eyes), and that the hair and eyes should be of similar hue. There are rare occasions where this doesn't happen and still looks good, but I think it just makes sense.

I think that eyeshadow is almost a nil-factor, since you can barely see it anyways...at least, that's the way it looks on my monitor. And you know, that's a good point to make...all these things will look different to each of us, since we all have different equipment generating the image. Regardless, beyond color scheme, I think eye angle is another important factor. For humans/Zabraks/etc., I NEVER slant the eyes downward. The eye slant is either parallel to the floor or higher, simply because a downward slant does not look appealing, IMHO.

Eye size is another big one. I don't ever use the max in either direction when doing it for myself, just because neither looks very good. Sizing I generally agree with what was said before: larger eyes on women and smaller eyes on men. I think that works, though, because they have different size ranges for each gender (just like with height). However, I may be totally off on that.

Other than that...hrm...oh! Eyebrows! Lol...this one is easy. For 99 percent of clients, a thinner eyebrow always tends to look better...unless you have someone who you know is going for that "bushman" look...then you find the thickest ones you can. I don't think I've ever used the middle-range eyebrow options...lol. I also always make eyebrows within three shades of the hair on the top of the head, unless the client requests otherwise.

In summary (I know, shut up already! ), I think it really depends on the tastes of the person you are working on, but there are general guidelines for each race and gender that just...shouldn't be crossed. /grin. I hope my post is of some assistance to you.

My two creds,

Dan
