Thread: What's your ID tolerance level?

Hey, I just was reading the forums, and it seems different ID's have MUCH different tolerances for certain customer types. I just want to make a short quiz and se how everyone would react...

Someone sends you a /tell "Can u give me a haircut." Do you:

My policy is "try anything once." I'll do whatever I can to help a client the first time—if in that time they're rude, or they stiff me, they don't get a second shot. I generally won't travel off the planet I'm on, though, unless I already know the client to be worth the trip.

The problem is if you don't have a big enough brick or can't find the right head. The devil is in the details.

I willalways help them, however, if I'm short on time (ie. logging soon or have planned out exactly what I have to do in the time before I hope to log) I am less likely to squeeze in a client who is asking, "can u do hair" or "were r u?". As for traveling to other planets? IroleplayID (thoughI get lazy aboutit with frequent customers who don't roleplay)in my beauty salon and once I've explained that, I've only hada handful ofpeople ask me to travel. Three times it was for roleplay reasons and I went to them, they paid for my travel expenses. The other times I either did not go because they had no real reason to have me travel to them and were easily convinced to come to me, or I just didn't have time to travel before having to log.

This really depends on who it is, his or her name, what the message says, and when it's sent. Usually I'll answer, but if i'm busy or frazzled, the questionable tells are the first to get the axe.

Example 1:

Penetrator'footlong tells you: can u giv me a haircut.

Any name that is rude, ugh. No. That boy is going to be trouble. Though the red flags go up, I will answer, but be on guard. In this example, his extremely long name suggests that he's got no last name, AKA, he's a wookiee, so chances are, this whole scenario can be ended by me saying something like

You tell Penetrator'footlong: Only certain races, wookiees and mon cal can't have hair because the bug which caused that was fixed.

Penetrator'footlong tells you: omg that suxxors, kkthx.

Example 2:

I'm loading:

Dood tells you: can u give me a haircut?

Dood tells you: can u give me a haircut?

Two messages before I hit the ground running. At this point, if I have time to help him, (i.e. I'm going to be in my shop for a while restocking anyway) I might answer. If I don't have time to deal with him (i.e. quick harvester run) I don't. My theory is that people should figure out to leave a message on the e-mail if they don't get a response through tells. Strangely, that does not happen.

If I hear from him later AFTER I'm done loading, I will probably answer him, but in general, my theory on the load-botherers is that they see your name pop on the friends list, and only at that moment do they remember you exist, and therefore send you a tell. Two minutes later, they forget what they wanted.

Example 3:

Smacktard tells you: can u do hair?

Afk autoresponse: I'm currently blah blah blah.

(10 minutes later)

Smacktard tells you: can u do hair?

Afk autoresponse: I'm currently blah blah blah

(10 minutes later)

Smacktard tells you: can u do hair?

Afk autoresponse: I'm currently blah blah blah

Repeated tells after getting the afk flag, and it doesn't register to use the e-mail? From his question, it's clear that he can get an answer from email (i.e. not the "how do BE components work" discussion that requires interaction). I won't answer now, even if I do become un-busy. I had a really bad experience with a stalker one time with my afk flag on ("I know ur there....") and so I'm really wary of the people who won't let it go after a few tells with the afk.

In general:

Usually I have a reason for not answering tells that has nothing to do with grammar - namely timing, or an inability to grasp that I'm truly busy. If I don't feel like doing image design and I'm in a bad mood, I won't take any customers because they'll just irritate me more than usual. As a reward to the polite, if i'm just "screening calls" or avoiding people and not really busy, I will always answer polite tells with my afk on. So it's not a matter of shunning the rude, but rather rewarding the polite.

I never travel. Never. Never. Usually the ticket out to Dantooine will be enough "screening" for undesirables, both in difficulty, and in the cost. I get much better clientele now that I've moved out there.

My rule: answer the initial tell and you can usually cut things off if they're going sour later with the traveling requirement, or the appointment-making. If the customers have to make any effort whatsoever, that usually gets rid of the problem clients.

Now a few tips for the customer

E-mails are excellent. Really, we will answer. Even if technically "afk". It may be the best way to reach us, since sometimes tells just fly by.

Long, detailed messages are best. When I get "hi" or "do u do hair" I have no idea what's coming next. However a message such as "Pardon me, XXX recommended you for image design, and I was wondering if you had time for an appointment today." Yes, great. Honestly, we don't care what the changes ARE (body, tattoo, pfft, who cares) just that you want an appointment. The smart image designer will follow up with questions about what you want done, to make sure that it's possible before you travel all the way out here.

Phrasing is very important. It's the difference between a busy image designer squeezing you in, and telling you that she's too busy.

  • Say "do you have time to do my hair" not "can u do my hair"

  • Say "do you have time to answer a question" not "can u answer a question"

  • Say "when would be a good time to come by" not "can i come now"

And of course flattery and personal references are always a plus.

For friends, I will invest as much time as I can to make them look perfect. Because they will give back much more than just credits.

For customers... I charge 10k for a quick make-over or 100k for a full session.

Why so much? Because if the person does not know what they want and just feel like browsing through every single thing I can offer, then they have to pay for my time and patience. And why wouldn't you either? Time is money... or that wasted time could of been invested into your friends or more important matter.

You have to keep in mind that some people get tired of their looks very quick... and change almost every week by leeching off some Image Designer for free.

Sorry but those people won't take advantage of me. I'll spend 2 hours if I have to on 1 person, but my 100k price is my 100k price.

I like all of NJ's post, as usual.

To elaborate: I honestly havevery little patience with doing ID on people I don't know. It So for me, it would pretty much just depend on the person, and the way they asked, and my mood at the time. There are a few automatic dismissals. One, like NJ, is repeatedly sending me tells even though I'm AFK. This also goes for people buying mind buffs. I don't dance in the cantina AFK, but I will put my tag up if I'm in an intense chat convo with my guild or my player city. They should make a new tag, DND (Do Not Disturb). LOL Anyway, if they give me grief about my prices, that's an automatic dismissal. Also, I tend to be very, very wary of anyone who just can't bring themselves to spell out words like "you" or "are". It drives me absolutely, 100% crazy.

I'm the cranky image designer your mother warned you about... LOL

Look... I am really trying hard to bite back some rather harsh words here, so if any slip out... sorry.

It seems that we all agree time is money. And since I work for Tips and not Fee's, my concept of the time/money scheme is a little different.

The more I am willing to dedicate my time (And creativity, and mind, and Muon packets, Ugh) to a clinet, the more they are willing to tip me. I got tipped a sizeable sum yesterday becuase I offered to work someone in Coronet, and worked all the way through TWO Muon downers. He bought a case from the Bazaar for me, and tipped another 10k on top.

I also differ, I guess, in that I enjoy my profession a lot more. Okay, I know that sounds harsh (I warned you) But to me spending time ID'ing someone is fun, as long as they are satisfied. Have you ever made a suggestion to a client who is asking to browse through your entire stock? I've skipped several do's down the line for someone, because I thought that would look good on them, and said so, AND they usually like it and accept it. (When Iask if you have given this creative suggestion, I am NOT talking of those who are just trying to trick their clients into complacency. YOU know who you are!)

/sigh

I have hadtwo bad experiences so far. The firstwas almost the first person i ided. i helped him as good as i could, considering the lack of hair options i had at that time.He tipped me one credit on purpose. The other one let me do a whole make-over for nearly an hour. He was a citizen in our city. Afterwards he didnt pay, saying he didnt have any money (at master bountyhunter) . I didnt know at that time but he begged for money or goods by other citizens or conned them. I had the pleasure of seeing him removed from the city.

On starsider the tipsystem is much used. I do too. Tips usely range between 5k-10k. Sometimes i say i use tipsystem afterwardswhen i expect someone not giving the tip themselves so people know not to expect it free. Especially if they have a master title. That works fine.

Regardless from how the question is asked or what the person is called , i answer him. I have the phylosphy that if i didnt wanted to be disturbed i shouldntadvertise master image designer above my head. If i am with someone i always ask if that friend has a problem with me iding someone. if i am about to log i say in a rare occasion no. if i am busy with a client i tell that too. So far all my customers didnt object to waiting their turn.

All in all i have had a lot of very nice experiences with all sorts of people. Its a shame that now all ids end up in people either asking for something that doesnt exsist or ending up with the same hairdo cuz there isnt a nice new style and they tried everything already.

I am always willing to help anyone better themselves and cannot recall ever turning anyone away, but I do typically make them come to me except under special circumstances, ie..Jedi's I have ID'd....I have a high tolerance to all customers, I enjoy what I do, and love to hear the praise, maybe that is just me = )
