I find there are one or two good light sources in the side rooms of the cantinas.
Another way is to stand very close behind your customer, zoom out a little way in third person and adjust the view until you can see clearly...if you use your personal light you should no longer have those horrific shadows on their face.
The height thing, if you can, adjust your height to the same as your customer. After you've adjusted your height kneel and stand again, this resets your point of view in first person to the new height. In first person you should now have a good view of their face.

I've forgotten to make myself taller afterwards as well, couldn't figure out why I felt like I was scurrying everywhere. ![]()

A good, well-lit place is the back rooms of the city cantinas. It's away from all other people, it has nice lighting, and it's completely clear of chairs/tables/whatever else. I've also found that with turning on the personal light and then zooming into first person, it's pretty easy to find a good position that highlights every feature of the person's face.
Although... my character is really short. Hehe. So what works for me might not work for anyone else.
